Is this a broken 'high water alarm' switch?

1987 O'Day 272. Only thing I can think of is that it is a high water alarm switch that has been broken off and the mounting plate left cemented to hull.

This is on starboard side of engine compartment. I don't THINK there is anything beneath it (thru-hull)...

Anyone with a 272 ever seen this on their O'Day (or any other model)?

Looks like a previous owner bonded a depth transducer to the hull inside the boat. This is a common practice. If there are no wires coming out of it most likely it is no longer working and you could remove it. A good oscillating tool will cut through whatever bonding material was used quickly and should be easy to not cut into the hull. Do you have another depth transducer in another location? Make sure whatever it is doesn't go through the hull before you cut it out if the boat is in the water.

Yes, depth transducer just forward of keel...

No wires that I can see or any wires close that make it look like it was ever in use... But if had been a warning switch, would have had to been wired too...

It appears to have 2 'ears' on which something connected that would allow movement up/down - like a float... One 'ear' is broken off, making me think someone tried to remove the 'float' and broke it off. Also has another portion that looked like some type of support (plastic pin easily seen on middle picture ).

Definitely won't try anything with boat in water. Causing no problem as-is, just curious as to what it might have been. Will probably pull in spring for new bottom and willl check then.

our 272 does not have this so I bet the above is correct...

Might be a transom mount transducer, commonly used on small trailerable motorboats.

I agree. The PO probably bought a fish finder style display or chart plotter that came with a transom mount transducer. The broken off part you're seeing is probably the part that would attach to the transom.

Not much doubt in my mind that this is exactly what it is.
