Is there a rebuild kit for this Volvo diesel freshwater pump?

Hello:

I have a Volvo diesel M.D. 2020 – D.

I have a leaky freshwater pump. The part numbers apparently 3803970.

For a new pump they want almost $700.

Is there a way to get some sort of a rebuild kit rather than spend that kind of money on just one part?

Thanks.

Michael

Typically, when a raw water pump starts leaking, it is the shaft seal.. usually a part that costs about $10. If you aren't comfortable replacing the seal yourself, remove the pump and take it to a local machine shop.. The seal and bearings should be replaced together along with a new impeller .. those parts are standard.. The standard part numbers are on the parts.. CHeck out Maine Sail's How To rebuild a pump

Your pump will be similar but not identical to the one in the pictures..

That's your closed system pump on your engine? I use Parts4engines, in the UK. The best prices anywhere and the pump comes with the pulley flange, they have yours listed for $168 Can., even cheaper for you in the USA

The pump in question is the fresh water circulation pump - not the seawater one.

These can be fixed but you will need a press maybe a decent lathe, the bearings, and seals and possibly a few other parts as well. As far as I know the parts are not available in a kit - but if someone can get them please send me that information.

Anyhow if you do not have the tooling you will need to find a shop to assemble, disassemble, find and furnish the parts. The bearings are standard at any bearing supplier. The seals might be but it in cases I have had (not this particular Volvo circulation pump) about half the time we ended up machining the housing in order to fit new substitute parts. Also there are other miscellaneous parts and you might have to make those yourself too.

You do not tell us where you are however these pumps are available in Europe aftermarket for about $200 plus VAT. Brian Robin's advice here shows a replacement pump is a bargain - unless you fancy learning the mysteries of how to rebuild things.

You could send the pump to someone like Flying Dutchman in Selma, Oregon. If you want to know what is involved watch his youtube videos.

Jeez - simply order from the source Jim gave you. Call them if you have questions.

If you want an analysis why buying direct Volvo (Penta) parts cost a bunch while second market resellers of the same Volvo parts do not - you are in the wrong place.

On the other hand if you just want to get what you need - at a reasonable price - then follow the leads Jim and Brian have given. After more than 50 years at this sort of thing I can say that a $700 pump is not $500 better than the $200 model.

No need to get feisty. I was just trying to figure out whether it was one of those “too good to be true” where it ends up not being true.

Well, my 'too good to be true', pump I bought from parts4engines, is still working after 2 years. And fyi, it was an OEM part as well!

In response to the wuote above, the problem is that there are more than one serial number of M.D. 2020. They all use different pumps apparently, believe it or not.

With the Perkins people or Catapillar know the different models?.

A lot of times the cheaper price is because your buying a tractor or industrial motor part and not one for a boat. Same part different market. I reciently bought a genuine kobota fresh water pump for $110 where the same part from Universal was north of $500.

Volvo might have changed p/n for different years however I believe it is the same pump, casting engine casting
Etc...the 100 series Perkins I believe is the most produced small diesel in the world from tractors to skidsteers, boats
Generators etc or buy from Volvo Penta
And pay 5 x the price
