Is there a protocol to naming a boat

this is my first large boat and am looking to name it. is there a protocol to registering a name? thnx, Ray Edens Sunset,SC

Your boat name doesn't need to be registered unless your boat is is going to be a documented vessel (registered with the feds as opposed to standard state registration and tagging). So name away. Have fun on your new boat!
