I have just purchase a 1987 O-Day 322 sailboat. It has a Apelco DXL 6300 Loran C Navigator. I know GPS is the technology of choice for navigation. But the Apelco has some nice features, I would like to use it for a while and put off buying a GPS. Now, can some please tell me, are the Loran C transmitters still operating the Great Lakes? If so, are there any plans to decommission the system? I have ask several people and got conflicting answers.

Loran-C will continue to operate "indefinitely"

Bill, It appears Loran-C will continue on, at least for now. I pasted a notice below that I found at one of the Coast Guard websites. I have a 1987 28.5, and it, too, has an Apelco Loran. I use it primarily as an anchor alarm, although it's nice to have as a navigational backup to my handheld GPS. THE SECRETARIES OF DEFENSE AND TRANSPORTATION RECENTLY SIGNED THE 1999 FEDERAL RADIONAVIGATION PLAN. AS THE OFFICIAL SOURCE OF RADIONAVIGATION POLICY AND PLANNING FOR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, THE 1999 FRP PROVIDES FOR THE INDEFINITE CONTINUATION OF LORAN-C: QUOTE WHILE THE ADMINISTRATION CONTINUES TO EVALUATE THE LONG-TERM NEED FOR CONTINUATION OF THE LORAN-C RADIONAVIGATION SYSTEM, THE GOVERNMENT WILL OPERATE THE LORAN-C SYSTEM IN THE SHORT TERM. THE U.S. GOVERNMENT WILL GIVE USERS REASONABLE NOTICE IF IT CONCLUDES THAT LORAN-C IS NOT NEEDED OR IS NOT COST EFFECTIVE, SO THAT USERS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRANSITION TO ALTERNATIVE NAVIGATION AIDS.
