Hunter 39 Grand Lake Oklahoma
I'm retiring and would like to move my 2012 Hunter 39 from inland Oklahoma lake water to Florida for offshore coastal cruising. My sailing friends tell me Hunter's are good lake boats but not so much for sailing the salty seas. Any perspectives on these opinions?

If you have taken good care of your boat and have all the required safety gear there should be no issues. When you get to your chosen area you will soon learn of any additional gear needed.
Before you haul your boat down there you should start looking into insurance for both the journey and where you plan to keep the boat. That is probably the most difficult issue.
Now, prepare to have ball sailing in that warm water and sun.

Not True

When I sailed my2007 Hunter 36 from NY to Florida 9 days all far off shore my crew had the same opinion and pissed me off when they said that they really did not trust my H-36 for ocean sailining
A few days out and at end of the trip they changed their opinion and said my Hunter H-36 was a good ocean boat for sure and would love to be invited for more off shore trips.
Most times it's the crew and captain that makes the sailboat.

Re: Not True

I have sailed my Hunter 34 from Montreal to Labrador, sailed her to Magdalen Islands (120 offshore of mainland Quebec in North Atlantic ocean, then sailed her to Florida and the Bahamas, including crossing over to Eleuthera and back through the Abacos. Singlehanded !!! Follow Ray's advice Re insurance and go chase your dream. You'll find quickly if you need to add anything to improve the seaworthiness of your boat and hence to your own comfort level regarding your safety and that of your crew ! Seadaddler is right: "Most times it's the crew and captain that makes the sailboat". And that also involves being responsible enough to pick a good weather window before passages. Have fun !

We looked at the 39 at the show last season, it is European Union rated, class ''A'' Ocean, so the hull is sound and insurable.

Check out our blog www.discoveryboat.blogspot.com we have been cruising for a year, crossed the Gulf of Mexico, down the west coast of fla, then up the east coast to Annapolis, then back down the coast to Miami, soon to the bahamas and hopefully Virgin islands in the next few years. Are these boats as bullett proof as a passport or valiant nope, but with some good sense there plenty good enough to cruise the coast and to the islands. Would I choose to cross a ocean in them, no, but I would not choose to cross a ocean in any boat.

Looks like the only thing that needs to be looked after is the battery bank size and how to recharge effectively.. ( I see refrigeration in stock pictures of the 39)
