I have a 22 ft. hunter with a 7.5 evinrude which is 18 years old. I was thinking of buying a 8 hp XLS honda but I'm affraid it maybe to heavy for my boat. It's a tender boat and I was wondering if it would list to much and cause the boat to sail bad. Does anybody out their have a 22 ft with a 8 hp honda on it. Does your boat handle it well or do you think I should just get A new 8 hp johnson 111# vs.62# I appreciate any help I can get . thanks alot

Motor data is available for all engines.

George, All outboard motors have published spec. about their weight, cc's, horsepower and physical size. Go to the manufacture's web site and compare. The Hunter sailboat site should be able to tell you the recommended hp. for your size boat. Four stroke motors are the best way to go if you plan to purchase a new outboard. Spendy, but there is no blue smoke con-trail. We have a 1995 H26 with a 1983 Honda 4 cycle 9.9 hp that weighs about 78# and runs beautifly and has never been apart. Good Luck, Ray

OMC

Just an "Item of Interest" OMC (the manufacturer of Johnson and Evinrude motors) has recently declared bankrupcy. I bought a 95 model Johnson 9.9 4 stroke outboard that was probably the worst motor I have ever owned. Not only was it unreliable, but extremely difficult to get parts for and service. I've owned at least a dozen Johnson/Evinrudes and believed in them up until this one. I would highly recommend that you buy anything but a Johnson. Whew...it felt good to get that off my chest. New motor

Hello George: I would go with a smaller 4 cycle, maybe 5hp. Should be good power and will be about same weight as old motor. Good luck red

Honda motors

You can check out the honda outboards at http://www.honda-marine.com/ I have a new honda 8hp for my H240. It has the extra long shaft and is listed at 101 lbs. dry. I do recommend the Honda 4 strokes. They cost a little more, but work great.

2001 Honda 8hp

Check out the 2001 model Honda 8. It is available with extra long shaft, electric start and alternator. Weighs around 85 pounds I believe.

5hp Honda

I currently have a 1988 5 hp Honda that pushes my 22 along fine. If you do go with the 8 hp 4 stroke you may want to beef up the transom around the mount since the four strokes have more weight and also more torque. I may be strengthening mine soon as it flexes visibly with the torque of my 5 hp.

listing problem

I forgot to mention that the boat does list a little with the extra weight. They should have put the fuel locker on the opposite side of the cockpit from the outboard. The list doesn't seem to affect the sailing much but I try to balance out the list by moving the battery as far to port as possible and keeping a few gallons of drinking water under the portside storage compartment. Also the 4-stroke will probably have a smaller fuel tank than the 2-stroke that helps as well.

Heavy Honda

I have a 10hp Honda long shaft (61 lbs + 18 lbs fuel = 79 lbs total) in my Hunter 18.5 along with 100 lbs of sand ballast (in plastic bags) in the stern area port side. Works just fine & the motor is great.

Did you use the bracket that came with the boat. I was thinking of getting A heavier bracket. I also got 50# of lead I was going to put under thr port berth Thanks again George
