Hi all, Back in the spring I was looking for Catalina 30 Mark II. Ended up finding a nice 1985meal Mark I. Surveyor said mast needed to be grounded to a thru hull grounding plate. I thought the Catalina 30 is grounded to the keel through one of the shrouds. Can anyone shed some light on this? In any case I'm happy the search is over. I really like the boat. Thanks. Tom

So what happens if you are in a lightning storm? The old Cal 320 I crewed on was grounded at the shrouds to the keel. We were hit by lightning several times over the years while racing in the gulf coast summers. Now that I own an 82 Catalina 30 should I be more wary of the weather than before?
Thanks for your responses. It finally occurred to me to contact Catalina Yachts. Someone from engineering responded and said that none of the boats came grounded from the factory. They had some info that they sent to new owners giving the pros and cons of having a grounding system. Thanks again. Tom
Tom, grounding and bonding are two separate things. Many folks get them confused. The idea is to separate them in your mind and physically on the boat. Too many skippers use the negative of the battery system for grounding the mast or bonding underwater metal fittings.
