Is Cat 22 SLOW?

I raced this weekend on a friends j-24 in the local club fall series. I have not seen a Cat 22 in this series before, but there was one on Sat. I was astonished at how slow and sluggish it seemes to perform against all types of boats. I know the J-boats are fast, but the poor Cat didn't do well against hunters, Cal's, etc. What gives? I thought we (cat 22 owners) had a fairly good boat. It is giving me second thoughts about trying to race mine in this series.

Operator error?

Don't judge the performance of the design by the performance of an operator - he may be a novice. Get out there

yes its slow

the 22 phrf's at 270. the oday 23 at 258, the compac 23 at 260, the huinter 23 at 236. the difference in speed is the munber of seconds the faster boat gives per mile to the slower boat. the 22 is slow compared to other racier models . thats why boats are handicaped. however fast is not the only consideration in whether a boat is good . for me the question is "does it do what i want it to do". race the 22 and you will do fine after the phrf correction . the only consideration is that if you are slower the likelyhood of sailing in a dying breeze is raised. seldom have i come back on a catchup breeze to do well in a longer race. but for around the bouys you will do ok. better yet class race other 22s and dont worry about it. if you really want to go fast try a starboat or laser. i hardly phrf race any more. if i want to sail fast i take out the laser , if i want to drink beer i take out the catalina. good luck

Very slow

I PHRF raced my 22 for the first time and finished 8 min behind the last boat (besides me) after the times were corrected I took a 2nd. It is a very slow boat when up against other classes. It even felt hopeless at times. Unless your up against other C 22's its hard to judge how you are doing. Eric Viegut Color Blind C22 5810

dont count yourself short

dont think your boat is slow, I have outrun many a boat larger than myself when racing PHRF...the 22 is under-rated for performance....I've taken so many firsts, I sometimes sandbag so it dosent look to bad...and my boat has been bumped 9 seconds per mile because of its keel and wider beam...My 22 is a newer MKll... with the right sails you can exceed hul speed upwind and set upon 12 to 14 knots with the kite up in a good breeze on a down-wind run...I've done it......

A "healthy" puff

I phrf race locally and find if there is a stiff wind, I can outright beat (before rating is tacked on) boats of similar and quite a bit larger size. My Cat 22 seems to love it when the wind is whistling but when you get in a light air situation, it is almost impossible to keep up (new sails may help in this area too!).
