Is a Vega's hawse pipe too small?

This question is for those who have an anchor roller (or windlass, or both). Is it difficult to feed rope/chain down the hawse? It looks smallish, and too far forward. Should I consider installing a larger one, possibly further aft?I'm going to make the chain locker watertight, with a through-hull drain. So no worries about water ingress. Thanks in advance.

IMHO the hawse pipe is very narrow.I now resort to asking a crew member to pull the chain from below after "jiggling" the chain in a futile effort to get the last few metres to drop.--

Thanks, John, I thought that would be the case. I have removed the forward bulkhead, and applied a layer of heavy biax cloth the the forward side. I plan to epoxy the bulkhead permanently to the tabs it was screwed to, then make a thick epoxy plug for the bottom. I have made a cover for the access hole in the bulkhead, glassed the forward side of the cover, and will install it with screws and a neoprene gasket so there will always be access to the inside of the locker when needed. My plan is to then install a through hull drain on one side (or both sides) of the hull.I'll need to buy and install a larger hawse. I notice they are almost all oval shaped, and have no covers - but I don't see this as a problem, since any water gaining ingress will quickly drain out.One thing I haven't decided is how to secure the bitter end of the rode inside the locker.

GeneAlmost all anchor hawse I know of and sell have covers - some are hinged and some are lift off with chain keeper. I can't imagine you would want one without a lid.http://www.go2marine.com/category/12766/chocks-hawse-pipes-for-boats.html

Walt, I'm leaning toward 30' or so of chain and the rest in three strand. I'm a Mantus guy, so probably a #25 on a Windline or similar roller. Florida/Caribbean cruising area.

On one occasion under very difficult circumstances which I won't go into I had to lose my anchor and anchor line. I had to cut through the cable to let it go so fixing the bitter end was not a major problem. If you have a hatch in your waterproof bulkhead you can attach it to the same point as at present.Mike On Monday, 31 July 2017, 3:10, "walt judy brown allore bestvega@... I installed a manual windlass. I removed the old hawse, glassed the hole and drain a new one. The forward bulkhead was replaced with a watertight one (10mm marine grade plywood, glassed on the forward side, and a watertight hatch. I use chain. Looks good. I notice from the pictures you are using a swivel on the anchor. It is installed incorrectly. There should be 4 or 5 links of chain between the anchor and swivel. With the swivel attached directly to the anchor there is only sideways movement if the anchor is jammed by bending the swivel which is quite common. Many feel swivels are totally unnecessary including myself, but installed correctly there is little downside.

I guess I have a different take on anchors . I came down from a
30,000 lb boat to a Vega because I thought I was getting too old
to wrestle the big boat around. I am now 83 years old and still
sailing. I have a manual windlass in my shed and have been
dreading the day when I would no longer be able to handle anchors
without a windlass. I guess that time is coming? I bought a Vega
it being small and light thinking I can handle it, and I can. I
am guessing you guys are young and certainly strong enough to pull
in one or two light little anchors by hand. Don't you need the
exercise? Set in the cockpit all day on our butts and once a day
maybe pull in an anchor. IF you were sailing 40 or 50ft boats no
doubt you would need a windlass. I just think a windlass on a
27ft 5000 lb boat over kill. All you have to haul in is a piece of
rope and chain motoring forward until on top the anchor a little
pull with the engine and until she breaks loss then hoist a 30 lb
or lighter anchor by hand. Its okay to have a windlass if you just
want one but I can see no practical reason to have one. I hope to
do with out one two more years then I guess I will mount mine
then. I figure the more anchor pulling I do the better chance
there will be that I will still be pulling them at age 100. I am
not saying this in jest it really is the way I feel. Doug

Thank you for that info, Mr. Pollard, I have been on the fence about windlasses. I would rather escape the added weight, cost and complexity if I am sure I can retrieve the anchor manually in adverse conditions. What style and weight of anchor do you use, if I may ask?

First of all all my anchoring has been in shallow water the
Bahamas, Florida Chesapeake bay. For where I sail I carry way more
line than I need; I have a 100ft of chain and 150 feet Of line on
a Bruce anchor. I like it because it pulls in easy though it may
not have the holding power that a Danforth has?? On a second rode
I have 150 ft of line and 12 ft of chain with a Danforth. In the
Port locker I keep a large I think a 24 lb Fortress aluminum
anchor that is just kept as a spare with 150 ft of line and 12
feet of chain. I have ridden out many winter fronts, Northers as
they call them some with winds nearing 60 knots. As to the
Danforth a real Danforth is well worth the difference in price
over a cheap knock off. We hung on all three hooks In a class one
hurricane a few nights in the Bahamas once. Of course that coral
sand is really good holding. I am sure we would not have faired
that well in Chesapeake bay mud? The long anchor roads means if we
loose engine power we can let out all or line and jerk the anchor
out under sail if you take in the line as you sail toward the
anchor. I can't keep up with the speed of the boat but I can get
enough line on deck that the boat can pull the anchor. If you are
going to spend money one ground tackle I would carry two anchors
on the bow and one or two in lockers there is no greater sleeping
than with several anchors especially in close anchorage. Doug

Thanks, Doug! Great info. Ground tackle is one area where we are willing to open the wallet up pretty wide, if necessary. Two hooks on the bow, huh, the Admiral suggested that too. :) Is that what you have, with the Bruce and the Danforth up there? If so, I have some more questions I'd love to ask.

Yes, you are right, Doug. I hesitated a lot about the windlass. I worried that it is too bulky and heavy etc.I got it as a present; finally I decided to install it, because sometimes my wife uses the boat alone, too. Now we find it very practical and useful, so after all I don't regret the installation.Karoly

Hi. That is a loffrans windlass right? I have thought about installing one of em, few of my friends discouraged me against saying that they work very very slow. How is your experience with them. Thanks.

Gene, I like Brian's suggestion about the chain between the swivel and I can see the merit about them being in-necessary. I also like the idea of a water-tight hatch for access to the locker.
My biggest concern is attaching the line to the boat. it should be able to be dropped quickly meaning if using all chain a short length of line should be used on the bitter end of the chain to allow it to be cut.
I'm a windlass proponent. We once pulled up a waterlogged tree that I doubt that I could have budged manually. An anchor caught between a couple of large rocks could also problems that a windlass might overcome.

I forget the make of our hawse pipe but Seadog has a similar one with a removable lid. We modified ours so that the cover is connected to the pipe with a few links of 1/8 inch stainless chain. there is a hook under the cover that can be attached to a loop of
anchor chain so that the weight of the chain keeps the cover in place. A gasket made from modeling clay does wonders for keeping water out and is environmentally friendly. It's probably not needed unless taking water over the bow.

Pictures of our ground tackle are on the San Francisco craigslist where Lyric is sadly for sale. Go to boats click on sail and enter 27 feet for length to view. Walt
