I would think so!

Before buying my Catalina 36 with a Universal M25 engine (21 hp) I was concerned it would be underpowered, but have no problem reaching hull speed with a fixed 3 blade prop. I would assume the lighter O'Day 34 would have no trouble, but I don't know this from experience. Good luck! Trevor

Engine size

Dear Beth, Thank you for your note. I went through a few sample boat/engine combinations and I found apx. half of the ten or so combos, were using 25Hp or greater for the apx. 34 foot size of boat. One critical thing to keep in mind is the more items which get attached to the engine the less Hp is available for driving the boat. At your normal cruise you may only be achieving apx. 16 Hp and the addition of other Hp consumers will drastically affect available Hp from motoring. For instance a high output alternator may use as much as 1-3 Hp when running. An engine driven refer system may use 3+ Hp. Excessive weight consumes more Hp. When those items are used you may lower your available motoring Hp to 13 or 12. I would think that if the addition of external Hp consumers are not used you should be fine. Hope this helps. Kevin L.
