Is a tool necessary to tune in the rig?

I am anxiousely getting ready for the sailing season of 2001(too cold to enjoy just yet). I will take down my mast to replace my mast light and my wind indicator. After that I will have to tune in my standing rigging. Instructions from US Sails indicate a tension tool. Is that necessary? Does anyone have an alternate way of tuning in the stays?

Which boat?

Chris, Which boat do you have? Most owners manuals tell you how to tune rigging to a reasonable tension without a meter. If you get close, wait till the season starts and you will find many friendly sailors out there with tension meter that will be glad to not only let you use it but show you how. Then decide if you need one. r.w.landau
