I have a friend who has found a newly rebuilt 1 cylinder Yanmar diesel [12 hp] that he wants to install in his catalina 30. I understand that a 11 hp. engine was offered as a dealer option so maybe it would not be as under powered as I suspect. opinions please.

rebuilt YSB 12

There is nothing wrong with a Ysb 12 as long as you like the constsnt vibration of a single cylinder motor, and you are sailing in a lake with no strong winds or currents to motor against. I have they are like the Atomic 4, and the timex watch, they just keep on ticking and run forever.

I vote no ... catalina 30 is a heavy boat ...

and I bet the power spec on the 1 cyl ... is optimistic at best. J30s use the 2 cyl Yanmar and the J30 is 2/3 of the weight of a Catalina 30 with less windage ... and the 2 cyl isn't a hot performer on the J30. Vic

You better see one run first

I have an H30 with the Yanmar YSM12 (essentially the same motor), and it is one rough running machine. The vibration below about half speed is terrible. And it's not an alignment problem either. It's the same in neutral. The power is barely adequate for the 10,000 pound H30, but I'd increase it 50% to 100% if I ever repower. I'd hold out for a used 18 hp 2GM if I were you.

I vote no.

Hello Gord, I vote no. The engine is listed output at 11 HP but in reality you will be running the system at apx. 75% of maximum, which may reduce the HP to 7ish. This also does not take into account any after market add ons, like water makers altenators... Kevin

Absolutely not!

I have an O'DAy 30 which has the 2QM15 and its just borderline on Hp. the oday30cb tips the scales at 11,000# the catalina 30 is at 10,300# if repowering I'd go with the Yanmar 2GM series engine or equivelant.

nope

I agree with the rest. I would look for a Yanmar 2GM20 2 cyl 18 hp model.
