I am interested to buy an Irwin 43. (foot-itis desease, presently sailing a Catalina 25). What are some common problem areas of this model. How does she sail compared to other Irwin models? Any problems with the centerboard? I'm thinking I would prefer no moving parts on the keel, but maybe the center board model doesn't present any problems? Engine concerns? common leak areas? Thanks for your help. Dave Lyle

Great boat

I've had my 1988 Irwin 43MRK III Sloop for 7 years. It has a fixed keel and draws 6 1/2 feet. Besides a great layout, it both sail and motors beautifully. Under power, guests often ask "is the engin on"

Irwin 43 info

Dave, I've had my 1987 43cc for about 2 years now and have done a number of modifications and needed repairs. She sails and motors well, and adding a feathering prop has given her about .75 to 1 knot increase in speed under sail, that helps a lot in the typical low wind days of Southern California. I've repaired the strut, and have a delam on the foredeck that I will be cutting out and repairing. If your model has a swimstep like mine, keep checking the screws that hold it in place just above the waterline. Over time the may rust and bring water into the boat. It took me six months to fingure out why I was getting water in only when I took her out in rolling seas. I also added a sump pump to the bildge and ran the shower and headsink lines as well as the frig and lazarett drain line to it, so the bilge stays dry. (Note that the lazarett drain to the bildge and on some models the shower and headsinks also drain to the bilge and not into a sump.) The galley sink drains to a thruhull, so no problem there.

thru hull pump,drains etc. I-43

Scott, Any pics or diagrams pertaining to your rerouting of the drains from the head etc.,etc. directly to the sump pump and thru hull. The only negative regarding our I-43 is that both head showers and sinks as well as the galley sink drain into the bilge, poor design. We want to correct this problem and any help would be appreciated.
