I have a 1980 irwin 37cc markIV. When we purchased the boat the standing rigging was loose. we have since tightened the rig up so that each stay can be pulled about 2 inches the end result is the mast is straight. but when the boat is in its slip and the breeze picks up the mast is wobbly and the stays are vibrating and or sing/hum. is this normal. as when the rig was wicked loose we did not notice this at all. thanks jannet

Uppers, forestay and backstay should be tightened to allow them to deflect 1" when pulled by one hand from chest high with moderate pressure. Front lowers 1 1/2" and aft lowers 2". To measure, I use my book hook with a 1" increment scale taped to it and the butt against the mast. Also, sight up the mast to be sure it is straight.
