Refiting is not difficult.
Jerry, I just refurbished the hull of Citation 39 / 40 on the Sassafrass. I am at Duffy Creek. She has a solid glass, not cored hull. She had some stress around the keel as is common on an older boat as well as a some stressees wehere jacks were mis-placed over the years. I was totally intimidated by glass but had good fortune to hook up with an experienced glass guy on the easter shore whom I highly recommend. Contact me if you want the name at pshepperd@chemsail.comReglassing the hull took time but was not difficult. To do glass repairs, as noted prior, purchase a 4 inch right angle grinder from Lowes or home depot. Get the gritlock attachment (BOATS US) and remove the grinder cover and disc, then put on the mandrel and get 25 grit pads and grind out any problems.. they show up as white steaks through the glass,. Gind out until you get below this. Note use a slow side to side motion as it will keep from overheating the existing glass and damaging it. Also grind out on both sides for a 12 to 1 width depth ratio. If you have to go down 1/4 inch deep to get rid of the white line then you need to be 3 inch wide at top at the gell coat. After that it is time to glass. My reading indicated three types of resin may be used. Polyester, which was used originally, but which as poor adhesion to an older hull or two other resins with better adheasion... either epoxy, (west systems and MAS are two) or viny ester which is mostly availabe by special order from pro glass guys or marina stores as it has a 6 week shelf life in the can. I understand that vinyl ester has superior water profing properties so is better for below water line as it is more water impervious. Note that the vinyl ester I used turns from clear to brown when sufficient lpromoter (an organic peroxide) is added which is a bit easier as you know you got the correct ration.I had my hull professionally blasted to find all the stresses. next I ground out all stress areas by grinding to the 12 to 1 ratio with the grinder above. Cleaned her thoroughly, then glassed with vinyl ester and 1.5 once mat.. three to 6 layers depending on depth of ginding.... 3 layers = approx 1/4 inch buildout.Ground down all with the 25 grit, then coated with 1 to 2 layers of resin only. followed this with grinding with 60 grit. Then pulled gel coat to fair out and sanded again with 60 grit.Am now putting on Interlux 2000 system, 5 coats.Hope this helps!
