I have run across a 34 foot irwin that needs to brought back from the dead. I looked at the layout and can't seem to match it up with any of the citations I've seen photos of. when you enter the boat there is a quarter berth on the stb side with a drop down chart table at its forward end. There doesn"t appear to be a dinette but rather bench seatees. Oh yea, the chain plates were inboard, fin keel, aft stearing via tiller, I think. Top side there was a moulded splash rail, similiar to what I've seen on old Hunters and Morgan Out Islands. I don't know the year of the boat but the engine looked like the remaines of an Atomic 4. Any ideas?? Oh, one last thing, the engine inst.panel had the Irwin name on it.

Any ideas? yea! but what did you have in mind

do you like the shape of the hull? How good are you at raising the dead? How much effort are you willing to make it into a boat that you want? Tell us your expectations and then we can give you more than generalized suggestions.

raising the dead

This boat is being offered to me as a freebe. The interior is a bit trashed, however the bulkheads appear to be ok. There is about 2 feet of water inside the boat and it looks like a lot of the lose stuff is floating around. I understand the spars are at the yard but I don't know about the sails. The shaft log has been closed up and there isn't any sign of the strut, if there was one. I've been rebuilding wooden boats for about thirty years, but, I haven't gotten into much glass work (it's not my favorite thing to do). The hull and deck of this puppy appears to be solid but I haven't gone around it with my hammer yet. I was hopeing to see some photos of this model to see what they are supposed to look like. I would appreciate any suggestions on where I might be able to check one out. I will be in Annapolis the weekend of the 11th of November, if anyone knows of one in that area.

Jerrys, The fact that it is half full of water

is a good sign. It will float! The first thing you need for working a fiber glass boat is a 4 1/2 inch right angle grinder with sanding disks. Irwins are quite common on the cheaspeake so you should be able to find picture of the interior. Generally they are a good hull. And that is probably about all you have besides the spars. While you are in Annapolis look up Bacon associates. They are dealers and consignment sales of used boat parts.

Refiting is not difficult.

Jerry, I just refurbished the hull of Citation 39 / 40 on the Sassafrass. I am at Duffy Creek. She has a solid glass, not cored hull. She had some stress around the keel as is common on an older boat as well as a some stressees wehere jacks were mis-placed over the years. I was totally intimidated by glass but had good fortune to hook up with an experienced glass guy on the easter shore whom I highly recommend. Contact me if you want the name at pshepperd@chemsail.com Reglassing the hull took time but was not difficult. To do glass repairs, as noted prior, purchase a 4 inch right angle grinder from Lowes or home depot. Get the gritlock attachment (BOATS US) and remove the grinder cover and disc, then put on the mandrel and get 25 grit pads and grind out any problems.. they show up as white steaks through the glass,. Gind out until you get below this. Note use a slow side to side motion as it will keep from overheating the existing glass and damaging it. Also grind out on both sides for a 12 to 1 width depth ratio. If you have to go down 1/4 inch deep to get rid of the white line then you need to be 3 inch wide at top at the gell coat. After that it is time to glass. My reading indicated three types of resin may be used. Polyester, which was used originally, but which as poor adhesion to an older hull or two other resins with better adheasion... either epoxy, (west systems and MAS are two) or viny ester which is mostly availabe by special order from pro glass guys or marina stores as it has a 6 week shelf life in the can. I understand that vinyl ester has superior water profing properties so is better for below water line as it is more water impervious. Note that the vinyl ester I used turns from clear to brown when sufficient lpromoter (an organic peroxide) is added which is a bit easier as you know you got the correct ration. I had my hull professionally blasted to find all the stresses. next I ground out all stress areas by grinding to the 12 to 1 ratio with the grinder above. Cleaned her thoroughly, then glassed with vinyl ester and 1.5 once mat.. three to 6 layers depending on depth of ginding.... 3 layers = approx 1/4 inch buildout. Ground down all with the 25 grit, then coated with 1 to 2 layers of resin only. followed this with grinding with 60 grit. Then pulled gel coat to fair out and sanded again with 60 grit. Am now putting on Interlux 2000 system, 5 coats. Hope this helps!

Just purchased a 1983 Irwin Citation 34'

Hi Jerry, my husband just purchased a 1983 34' Irwin Citation this weekend, I took plenty of pictures of it, in fact every inch of it. Let me know if you would like for me to e-mail them to you and if so what you need. Barbara Stargazer GPT,MS
