Any knowledge on these old boats?
It's a freshwater boat with an atomic 4 that is getting water in the oil. Fella doesn't seem like much of a mechanic on the phone. I am going to look at it this week. Anything special about them I should know?
Do they sail well?

Here's a link to the post.

I see no one has answered. As I recall, the hull to deck joint was often a weak point.

Otherwise, it's all about the condition for a boat that age... Sounds like you need a motor, or at a minimum a rebuild. Depending how handy you are and how able you are to do the work, a new engine repower for that boat done by a pro is going to cost you in the neighborhood of $15k. You might get lucky and be able to rebuild that old atomic 4. I personally don't like gasoline engines on boats, but some people love those engines. But I'd sure be hesitant to rebuild that engine, so I'd consider a repower needed.

If you are lucky, the water in oil is a head gasket leak, or some complication in the water cooled exhaust mixer .. Worst case is a rusted through block..

also check out Moyer Marine .. the Atomic 4 experts..
I was leaning toward an exhaust elbow/manifold issue. Headed there today to check it out. I'm a boat mechanic by profession, but on this lake you NEVER see an atomic 4. I was thinking if I can get it right , like $2000.... it would be worth fiddling with or doing an electric repower in my spare time. I do not need huge range here. I just need it to get out of the cove, so maybe a few miles tops if the wind peters out.

If you are interested in a project boat for an inland lake, this might be suitable. Irwin's were production boats often "built to a price."

Expect to make a lot of upgrades and repairs. If you are interested in toying with electric drive, this might be a good candidate and well suited for your area.
