Subscriber: Neil Thompson =========== I have a 1987 40'' Hunter Legend. I have an iron keel. Each year I am see more rust coming through Pettit''s Hydrocoat 1240 Blue Antifouling paint. What should I do to solve this problem? I do sand and coat each year. Thank you Neil

sandblast, three coats of primer and then...

squeege on fiberglass resin. Then, light sand and bottom paint. This has wooked well for me. 5 years no problems yet.

Also look at a product called

Ospho Sold by Jamestown and Hamilton and probably by others. It only requires removal of the loose rust then it is painted on and alowed to cure and dry for a day or two. The rust gets converted to Iron phosphate. This then serves as a primer for any top coatings.

is a primer recommended by my an old time boat yard for my former H31 with iron keel. I sanded it down with a drill/bush and primed it with it. Never saw any significant rust after that for the next 4 years that I owned the boat.

Check out the Interlux site.

Neil: Bottom paint does nothing to protect against rust. You may want to check out the Interlux website. They will show you what needs to be done. Basically the keel needs to be taken down to bright iron. Then it needs to be sealed immediately (prevents oxidation). The keel can be stripped with a grinder and/or a wire brush on a drill. Another option is to have it sand blasted. If you never do anything you keel will still last longer than you or I.
