I'm very happy with the way my iPad holder is working out while navigating here in the North Channel of Georgian Bay! I multipurpose the pedestal for the cockpit table which is very sturdy and well placed

The only stock item is the ram mount arm and ball/sockets. The rest is home made. The base is made up of parts of abs plumbing. The cradle is actually a piece of PVC pipe, slit along its length, placed in the oven to warm up and flatten into a sheet. I curled over the edges by warming with a heat gun and trimmed it with a hack saw, file and dremel. It sounds more complicated than it was. I've used that PVC material for several projects on the boat. It is easy to work with, cheap and looks great.

I suppose that you could find a stock iPad holder that would work.

Very clever. Only question/concern I would have is, how much of it could withstand a crewmemner crashing into it? As a rule, I'd never put something in place in the cockpit that crew could not rely on holding them up if the fell into it; or grabbed for on their way down.

Jackdaw... The risk is definitely less than that same crew member sitting on my iPad or stepping on it when coming down off the front deck when I previously left it lying on the seat However, your point is well taken.

I use an iPad mini for my navigation also. I use a water proof cover by Lifeproof with a Scosche magnetic set up on my bulkhead. To avoid loosing it I use the handy strap that came with the Lifeproof cover as a safety tether.
Because it uses a lot of power when in Navionics mode, I have it plugged into a USB outlet via a ten foot USB power cord. My only concern is that pending the sunshine it can be hard to see. Need to put some sort of a shade cover over it.
