Does anyone know a good program for using an iPad as a chart plotter?

I use iSail GPS which was $8 when I purchased it.
Note that you have to use a GPS puck if you plan to be out of cell tower range
or if your ipad is not connected to cell phone. And, only a couple of these
pucks work with apples version of Bluetooth. I used one made by Dual and
am happy with it. Its a square puck with a red circle on it. You should be able to ID
it that way.

I use iPad with Navionics maps for navigation since 2012. Sailed around Europe (North Sea, English Channel, Atlantico coast, Gibraltar, the Mediterranean, Aegean and Adriatic....up to Venice, my home port.Never used a water resistant case. Have been sailing for 6 months since 2012, with the same iPad and iPhone and no problem. I usually keep the iPad inside the cabin. Works great and is much cheaper than dedicated chart plotter and respective maps. One problem with iPad is the difficulty to read the screen in the open in a summer sunny day, but the last generation iPad with retina screen has improved. In my case, with my older generation iPad I have no problem with the screen as much as I use it inside the cabin. The Navionics maps self update when I have a wifi connection (if any update available).I anyway have also a basic Garmin GPS (mod 72 I believe) as back up and to measure speed over ground.I would recommend you the Navionics! This year I have added the iAIS with an antenna splitter to monitor the ships around as I often sail single handed with long legs. The iAIS also works with the iPad/iPhone. But I do not have yet tested this system.Fair winds, marco baldanAlbin Vega 3339 SprayInviato da iPadIl giorno 09/giu/2015, alle ore 01:21, Nico Walsh nwalsh@... Another vote for iSail gps. It DOES NOT require you to be in cell tower range. You need data to download charts or share routes with friends, but once the chart is loaded (can store up to 500) it works with just the built in gps -- no external required. Also uses noaa raster charts which I'm used to (and they're free)!

I am thinking that an I phone is a really expensive piece of
equipment at what $400.00 yto have in the cockpit of a sailboat.
What if it goes overboard? Are you going to buy another one? I
would suggest buying a net book for less than $200 and then use
navigator on a thumb drive that is free. Use it for navigation, AIS
weather fax Psk31 comunication if you have a transiver Which you can
get for less than $200.00 This set up will give you everything you
need to sail anywhere in the world and comunicate with your family
at home. It's great stuff and the software for all of it is free.
