Ionian Vega

There I was strolling along the quay at Lefkada Town, Lefkada, Greek
Ionian Islands wondering what it must be like having the worry of
owning a new Oyster with a mast so tall it has a red light on top when
there like a rose amongst thorns was a Vega (see my photo
album "Peggy" - its the white one, the blue ones mine!) Looks new, no
name and not well used. I was so taken aback I had to take another

I know what you mean, although I have developed a technique which
involves max revs astern, ignore the drift and make a sudden and
final adjustment at the last minute! My berth in Emsworth marina is
a bit tight and I am next to the Commodore of my sailing club so I
have practised this to an artform - the trick is that when it goes
horribly wrong (my figures show 50% and is directly proportional to
the number of people watching) you have to have a story ready like
shouting at the crew to distract attention or act as if you intended
to go to the refuelling pontoon all the time. I was much encouraged
when unberthing from a crowded visitors pontoon at Hasler,
Portsmouth, in amongst the tupperwares and other assorted posh jobs
when Peggy decided to start one of her waltzes when a guy bolted out
of a moored boat, bounded accross numerous other boats to give a
well timed push with his foot on Peggys bow thus avoiding some
embarassing exchange of gelcoat and exclaimed to all "I know these
boats - bloody great - did an Atlantic crossing in one, bugger in
reverse though!"

Vic, your courage is enviable.

I recently backed off my finger berth with wind on my stbd bow so bow fell
off (despite giving it a good push off when starting maneuver) resulting
in boat pointing in to inner part of marina.

As inner part of marina was crowded making a turn tricky I decided to
reverse out with wind on stbd beam.

A very unhappy experience! I gave it plenty of power but stern went to
windward (as I expected it would initially). Unfortunately this behaviour
persisted as I gained way in reverse... The rest I will draw a veil over..

Never again if I can help it.

A combination of warps, boathooks (long poles) and forward power are the
way to go IMHO
