Hello all, I have been reading forum posts off this site for over two years and felt it was high time I introduced myself. I am a tractor-trailer diesel mechanic by trade. My wife and I are recent newcomers to the world of sailing in that this will be our third year sailing on Cayuga Lake in central NY. Our first boat was a Macgregor/Venture 22 that in my opinion was a great boat to learn the basics on. This past fall we purchase a 2000 h240, which came equipped with a bimini, stern rail seats and a Yamaha 9.9 and basically nothing else as far as options or add-ons. Needless to say I have many projects already planned out for the coming spring. Before we prepped her for winter storage we had only one day on the water for a half hour shake down sail. The shorted time was due to the motor running poorly, because of lack of use, and I didn’t want to be stranded first time out. Even with what little experience we have on her I am pleased with the purchase. On a funny side note. During my research of this model I came across a web page proclaiming a “free Hunter 240”. On a whim I sent the site an e-mail stating I would take the free boat and when could I pick it up. The response was from the one and only Crazy Dave Condon informing me of the nature of the page and the proclamation that if you want to play, ya go to pay. Well, we do want to play so we did pay and here we are. I hope I can contribute to the wonderful knowledge base this site offers. I know it has helped me tremendously so far. Welcome and glad to have you here !

DanH. Does this mean you got the H240 for the picking up and taking away? If so, then good deal! You ought have no trouble tuning up that little kicker.

Thanx for the welcome.

Ross, No, Dave wouldn’t let her go that cheap but I had to try. I purchased one in the Syracuse NY area for a slightly;D higher price. I am using the proceeds from the sale of my Macgregor to outfit the 240. Dan H. aka - wrenchbender Homer NY S/V garinion Hunter 240

Welcome aboard Dan

Can never have too many diesel mechanics on the crew. Good folks and ideas over on trailersailors.com also if you have not already found them.

Found them first actually.

Mike, We mechanics are a dying breed. Most young people that find themselves in this field are constantly looking for the easy shortcut rather than trying to understand how things work. I call them parts changers rather than mechanics; there is a big difference. As far as the trailersailors site, I garnered quite a bit of info on Macs from that forum also but I found the format to be somewhat difficult to follow. Oh, and thanx for your welcome also. Welcome aboard!

You live near Greek Peak skiing area. It is beautiful up there if not 5 ot 10 degrees cooler than here in NYC. I went to school in Binghampton and had friends at Cortland and Ithaca. What a great area and I guess that Cayuga is the logical choice for best sailing as it is one of the largest and I guess pretty clean and deep. The lake is just under 5 miles across betwen Cayuga Lake and Union Springs which sounds like a great area to keep her. Now that you are moving up in size where will you keep your H240 at the lake? I am assuming you wont be doing as much trailer sailoring with this larger boat. Will you be cruising up and down the 40 or so mile lake or mostly daysailing? Welcome.

Thanx CalebD, Glad to be here.

As a matter of fact I once worked at the Peak part time as a mechanic just so I could enjoy free skiing. Great slopes and a warm beverage at the bottom, what more could you ask for when it’s 5 below out as it is right now. I do still plan to mostly trailer sail but I am also looking for the every allusive affordable slip. We mostly weekend on the southern end near Ithaca out of the state park with some overnight cruises headed north. Dan H. aka - wrenchbender Homer NY S/V garinion Hunter 240

Welcome aboard!

Glad to get some new people around here. It is like a party...the more the marrier. I met Crazy Dave at the Annapolis Boat Show one year. I haven't seen him around here lately. I mainly cruise the Chesapeake Bay area. My current boat, The Spirit Of Liberty, is docked on the Potomac River. Oh well, Good luck and have fun on your H240.

Thanx BO, that’s awkward , how about Mr. Obsession

What little correspondence I have had with Dave has been very positive. I hope he hasn’t abandoned ship here because I think he has a vast knowledge of these purported Clorox Bottles and there is quite a few of them still around. Dan H. aka - wrenchbender Homer NY S/V garinion Hunter 240

Crazy Dave is alive

and well as of my last sighting of him. Two other Hunter owners and I in the New Bern area worked with him at the end of October conducting a "Demo" day. I met three very different groups of people, ranging from an experienced couple to a young family with four stair-stepped kids to a newly single boomer looking for a bigger boat. When the day was over Dave took me to dinner and we talked for around two hours. Don't let the "Crazy" moniker mis-lead you. If you get to know him he is a genuine friend.
