We are planning on starting a sailing trip in USA later this year. We will do the Great Circle route and visit the Bahamas etc. Who are we best to contact regarding an internet connection for our computer, while on the boat?

internet onboard

Greg, I am a tugboat captain that travels alot and use my laptop at work . Most cell providers have AIR Cards for pc's that will give you internet connection . However , I stay less than 6 miles off the coast of the Gulf Coast in Gulf of Mexico. I believe there are some off shore towers but your celll carier might have more info on them. Consider

Consider the tethering option for broadband access. Instead of a dedicated air card, and a separate phone line for that air card, you can simply use the broad band access on a PDA smart phone and pay the $15.00 per month to allow you to tether your laptop to your phone using it as the high speed modem. I use Verizon and tether my Motorola Q to my Macbook every day. The cost for broad band access using my cell phone as a modem is $59.95 per month..

Not a direct answer to your question ... but may help

I use broadband WiFi access with an external antenna for my laptop. Although many wireless routers are encrypted, invariably in or near populated areas you usually will find one that is 'open' and not encrypted; hence, open access to the internet. Along the coast of the NorthEast US I can usually 'connect' with such an antenna within 1 or 1-1/2 miles of the coastline. In most busy 'ports' frequented by sailors if you cant find open access, you can often find a 'subscription' (1 or 2 days) connection. All of these connections through open or unprotected wireless routers are high speed. Obviously such connections are not as reliable as an air card, etc. but the price is 'right'. http://www.radiolabs.com/products/wireless/wireless-marine-antenna.php http://www.wi-fihotspotlist.com/ http://www.wififreespot.com/ http://www.jiwire.com/search-hotspot-locations.htm etc. etc. etc.

cheseapeake to florida

A buddy of mine is in the process of sailing down the ICW and is now in Florida. He has used WIfi consistently while overnightng at marinas. There were some places they they did not have a connection, but for the most part, wifi was included in their marina fee for the one or two nights or a week that they were there.
