Internal to external halyards

Are the internal halyards on my 1985 Catalina 30 in a conduit in the mast or just hanging loose? I'm thinking of cutting an exit hole about 10 ft. up and bring the tail out to a wench and a cleat I would add to the mast. It seems that this arrangement would make it easier to raise and lower the main sail. The jib is roller furl so I could remove the jib wench from the deck and use it at the mast.

Instead of going to the trouble of cutting a hole in the mast for a halyard exit and mounting a winch and cleat to the mast, why don't you just lead the main halyard aft on the cabin top. Since you already have roller furling, leading the main halyard aft would mean that you don't have to leave the cockpit to raise any sails. All you would need is a cabin top winch, turning block, and a long enough halyard. I would certainly consider this setup before going to the trouble of altering the mast.

main halyard...Don

I didn't make myself clear. I already have internal halyards leading through a block back to the cockpit. I have a problem with twist and jamming at the stopper mounted on cabin top when I single hand while lowering the sail and just thought it would be easier to lower from deck since I need to be up there anyway to adjust topping lift, fold main and tie sail ties. Whatcha think?
