Good project

Hi Lauraine - My outhaul was completely useless until I rebuilt it using ball bearing blocks. The hardest part is getting the eight screws off to remove the end caps. I managed to get them off with a hammer and screw driver. I installed ball bearing sheaves at either end of the boom and upsized the internal wire (without the plastic coating that will eventually crack and bind in the sheaves). A double and a triple block inside will increase the purchase to 6:1. Lead it back to the cockpit through a rope clutch or leave the control line hanging on the boom. It's easy to adjust, even while close-hauled. You'll enjoy sailing more with the added control. Best, Trevor

Outhaul

If you check the archives you will find most of the info. When I did mine this past winter I also replaced the screws and tapped new threads for machine bolts. I would not have been able to do this project on the boat.

Thanks for the advice, Trevor and John!

The plan is to move the boom into the house and have at it this weekend.
