Internal mast wiring???

I have a 1982 Hunter 27' with a tall rig mast. Because of the internal halyards and electrical wiring, checking or repairing the wiring requires unstepping the mast.(The connection plug is located internally) Locals advise to reposition the wiring plug out side of mast and through deck. Others suggest cutting hole in mast for access. I really hesitate doing any of these options. I do not want to scarifice the integrity and strength of the mast or open up a hole in the deck. I'm pretty sure the root of problem is at the plug as I did check and repair all connections with successful testing before mast went up. Anyone have suggestions or advice on this topic? Yard charges for stepping and unstepping each time.Thanks

the cherubini 36 mast

We have a deck steped mast with the plugs inside the tube. Total nightmare. We have replaced all of the plugs, clip them and tape them. And still this year had to step the mast twice, and will need to replace another plug in the fall. The wires actually exit the tube below the boom and then reenter the tube just above the step to mate with the wires coming up the compression tube. The wires in the compression tube are the problem as the whole thing is boxed in. Someday very soon, I am simply going to drill a 1 inch hole in deck and work from there, it will be the best thing ever done to whisper.
