I have a 1982 37c with a yanmar 3qm30. At odd times the engine does not start. When I turn the key the siren goes on but, there is no contact to the starter moter. This does not happen on a regular basis. Can you help me with a solution thanks

Maybe Corroded Fuse

Have the same problem with my 1981 37c with same motor. First diagnosed as a starter about to go out but found it was a fuse on the port rear of engine inside a plastic case. This is the ignition fuse and apparently the contacts became corroded, after cleaning it solved my problem. Cheaper than a new starter. This winter I'll rewire the engine with a breaker in a more accesible location and scrap the old fuse holder.

Steve: I had the same problem, and like Charles it was the fuse holder. The fuse was OK, but the old corrosion monster had visited. Hose it wifh corrosion block or a similar product. RS

Starting issue

I had a similar problem with a 1986 Yanmar 2GM20F. Checked all the connections (had some minor corrosion and one weak crimp) and thought I fixed the problem. It didn't. Replaced the starter button. That didn't help. What DID fix the problem was adding a 12 vdc relay (with a 30 amp ATO fuse on the hot wire)to the starter solenoid. Bingo, problem solved. Whole thing cost less than $25.

Add the solenoid.

You should start as suggested, by cleaning all of the connections including the fuse. The basic problem remains, the wiring is too light and there are too many connections(at least eight). I had replaced everything: wiring, battery, battery cables, start button, key switch. And I had the starter tested. The problem remained, intermittent starting when I could least afford it. A few years ago I placed a sketch of the fix in the Photo Forum, see Related Link. Part #4731774 at West Marine(page 653) will work.
