Interlux VC-17M in salt water

My boat is a fresh water boat in Lake Ontario. I have always used the bottom paint of choice in this area , VC-17M. I have been asked if VC-17M can be used in salt water. Looking at the Interlux website, it says fresh water and slightly salty water only. If the boat is used in a higher salt water environment, do we remove the VC-17M and use something else?

I was in a similar position. I bought a freshwater boat and had it transported to Florida for use in the coastal waters. I was advised to soda blast the original VC17 off, apply an epoxy barrier coat first, then two coats or anti-fouling paint (don't remember the exact brand). I used different colors for the anti-fouling, so I could see when the first coat wore thru.

VC17 is unsuitable for saltwater. VC Offshore is unsuitable for anything but low-fouling saltwater.

Ken, since I bought your older Hunter, the VC17 wasn't working well. I had to take the finich down to bare fibreglas, and used 5 coats of INTERPROTECT 2000 for barrier protection. I then used Micron CSC and have no further issues. Micron is also great for salt water use, I am told.
