interior work

Hi. Getting ready to undertake the interior work. PO removed the headliner but the glue build up is untouched. Should I aim to completely remove it somehow(maybe using paint remover) or just sand it a bit to have sort of smooth surface? I expect a decent looking finished job and I can get some help from friends. I am keeper of the boat so looking forward to a long term ownership. Is interior woodwork made out of teak? Any suggestion for a varnish to resurrect them?

Be very careful what you do inside that boat. There is an old
saying about working on boats. The difference between an armature
boat refurbisher and a profession is the Professional is where to
quite. I don't think there is a head liner in a Vega at least mine
don't have one. MY cabin top is a couple layers of glass and on
top of that is a layer of plywood and on top of that is a couple
more layers of glass covered in a gel-coat. So scrub the inside of
the boat looks bad scrub it wit soap and water. IF it doesn't come
back to ;if then sand it enough to roughen it a little and repaint
it. It will look like a million. Go over the wood work with a
little sanding only to roughen it a little and varnish it with a
Satan finish varnish or maybe Tung oil. Tung oil is the main
ingredient in vanish. My inside wood was varnished with two coats
of Satin varnish and every once in a while maybe every two months
I pour a little tung oil on a rag and rub it on the wood. The more
you rub the more beautiful it gets. The interior wood I am pretty
sure is sapelle it is a wood similar to Mahogany. Teak is oily
and does not hold varnish well so be glad you have a better wood.
IF you have some black in the wood of a bulkhead ot may be rot but
most likely it is just stained by fungus. There are bleaches on
the market most of which contain oxalic acid in small amounts and
it will get rid of most or all of that black sand well in that
area because the bleach raises the grain. When you varnish the
patched area it will be a different color. The reason is all the
other wood has been discolored by sunlight and moisture give your
repair a year or two and it will look pretty much the same. Read
lots of n books on boat repair but remember to keep it simple
don't make a simple job hard. Doug Pollard

Yes, its striped sappelle wood. I think its from africa.
I purchased a bunch of sapelle veneer on ebay for like $25.
If you do that you can make your own sapelle replacement parts if needed.

I believe what bundchen1263 means by "headliner" is the neoprene foam which is glued to the sides of the hull. I have the same thing, and it too is falling off. I have only two ideas about it so far: clean off all the glue residue, sand it down a little, then paint it; or, do what Chuck and Laura Rose did on Lealea, which was to install strips of wood along the sides of the hull. Bundchen, if you haven't seen Chuck and Laura's youtube videos yet, they are excellent, worth the time to watch them all. And please let me know what works best to get that glue off the hull!Doug Pollard, thank you, I like the way you think! My interior woodwork is in good condition, but it looks a little "thirsty". I will experiment with using tung oil on it in a small inconspicuous area and see how it looks.

I would recommend using Danish oil. Several coats, it has some Tung in it believe .

A third option is to do as I've done, which is line the forepeak with soft cushioned floor vinyl. It looks good, is easy clean and is a good insulator.

Hi. The wood strip idea is too much in my opinion. I prefer to keep the boat light, simple, cost efficient. As I did in the past, usually sanding and painting should be sufficient. How great it would look depend on your prep work if u put more time the end results gets better accordingly. I should start in few days. Currently I m working on my mast.

I have seen it next to the tung at home depot. So many similar stuff gets u confuse. Anyway I bought the tung oil. We shall see.

I have a book (prob. out of print) that goes into the various finishes and compares them. Called "The wood finisher" by Bruce Johnson.Very informative if you can locate one.

thank you. i am done with varnishing inside. i used polyurethane minwax brand to match the varnish work done previously. it went on easy and looks ok i guess. there are some water damaged areas which required the wood to be replaced but i cant do that right now. especialy the wood work near the cabin floor turned black probably due to standing water at some point. tomorrow i will start interior paint. sanding is already done i ll put a coat of rustoleum primer and top side paint.

Just to let you know, that black rot on the wood near the floor will be a major source of that ever present smell of mildew that you find in neglected boats. Could make you very sick over time. My Vega was especially bad around the fridge where the drain line had become disconnected. I removed the wood and made new pieces. Very easy. If you have rot on the bottom edge of the main bulkheads (under mast support) you need to do that now. You cannot wait to fix that, it supports your mast. From: "bundchen1263@... very good point. the big heavy beam under the roof is in perfect shape. usually the problem area is the first 5-6 inch closest to the cabin floor. it appears that somehow the water collected inside and stand there for a while. i will inspect the pieces that works as part of the structural support to the mast. as you pointed out if its rotten its gotta go but it seemed more like a discoloration. i ll take some pictures. boat was on the dry for 3 years i wonder if thats the reason o dont notice mildew. i have asthma and iam very sensitive to mold and such.
