Checked archives and can't find answer unless missed something. PO had
previously docked boat so interior head door and wood around exposed to sun and badly
faded. Want to varnish to protect wood and preserve appearance. Ken
at Catalina factory sent me factory varnish. Turns out interior varnish sprayed
on and he said this varnish should be used in very small areas (brushed on).
Said he has sent out lot of varnish with no complaints. Said his varnish
department told him I shouldn't brush on such large area. Water based varnished. Anyone
touched up their interior varnish?

I have touched up larger areas in my 95 by brush, including all of my flooring. Catalina is probably using the same varnish made by Target Coatings. Nice thing about the water based product is that it levels well and you don't see brush marks.

Thanks. Did you use the Catalina factory varnish?

I bought varnish on line from Target Coatings, not from Catalina.

Can anyone give any guidance on what kind of prep has to be done to that head wall and door before applying any new varnish?

My head wall (not so much the door as the wall itself) is also faded and in need of new varnish.

Thanks,
Jim

I would think just a light scuffing with sandpaper (150/180-ish), then a tack cloth.

Thanks. Think this may be a project for this winter...after it cools off.

I would use a fine steel or better yet bronze wool pad to break the finish, followed by a wipe down with denatured alcohol and then the tack cloth. You can wool between each coat of finish also, just use a fine wool.

Be aware that if you use a water-based varnish like the Target Coatings products, you should not prep with a tack cloth. I've found that a water-dampened microfiber cloth works well prior to application.

Don't know if veneer or solid ply but I would use 220 then if you apply
additional coats use 300? Wipe clean after sanding with tack cloth.
Don't know if Catalina used stain first before spray varnish so you might
try small area somewhere to see if sanding off stain. If so you will get
different shades if take off too much if heavy on the sanding.

I would like to Re-varnish the Cabin table with a nice Poly-urethane during the winter.
Any thoughts? The table is in great shape, I just like wood and a great finish.

Do you know what's on there now? Easiest to stay with the same type.

I've been experimenting with exterior water base polyurethane and so far have had great results. I painted a piece of wood and left it on the end of the dock for a full year in Canada, and it looks as good as it did when I first did it. Winter and all summer.
