Bob Talley

I have just installed an air conditioner in a 1986 H-34. The unit is mounted below the chart table in a new teak enclosure. I want to stain the new teak to match the original color. Any suggestions?

Cetol

I added some new teak pieces to my 84 H31 and used one coat of Cetol. It matches the existing wood very well. Don't use more than one coat or it starts to get to orange. Bob

Captain's Varnish

Why use Cetol and then worry about it turning orange? Use Captain's Varnish, and apply as many coats as you want. It's clear and UV resistant. I don't know why anyone uses Cetol. It muddies the color of the wood.

try scrap first

Matching stain is usually tricky. With experience I've gotten luckier in matching the "almost red oak" interior of Windrose, our h40. My advise -- try the stain on a piece of scrap, coat it with your varnish (I'm using Minwax Polyurethane below decks out of direct sunlight) and compare it to what you want to match. Tidewater Marine in Harve de Grace MD carries a lot of Hunter original products. You might try them for specific product suggestions. Even if they tell you the specific stain, try it on a piece of scrap first. How long you let the stain penetrate, how heavily you apply it etc will all effect your match. Good luck.
