Interior upholstery material?

Hello all,

I am now in the final stages of a complete refit of our Vega and I was
wondering if anyone had any input on good interior fabric for the
cushions. Melissa and I will be liveaboards, so we need something
durable and easy to clean. I was also pondering replacing the cushion
foam (the one we will sleep on). What is the best foam out there?
Thanks,

Cedric and Melissa

I finished my cushions in 2002 with sunbrella. It has been very good and
stain resistant. I found a seamstress about 20 miles from Charleston, S. C. I
think the foam is 5" polyurethane instead of 4."

Outside in the cockpit I just bought two 31" and two smaller approx. 25"
blue cooler covers from West Marine. It's very comfortable sitting at the
original table in the cockpit while at the dock. Plus these vinyl coated blue
cushions are very easy to clean and inexpensive.

Hello, We used Naughasoft for the main cabin. They are white. Perhaps
a mistake. They stain more than we'd like. But they dry out quickly.
Forward we used a standard polyster upholstery. We wrapped the foam
with fiber fill to soften the look and for more comfort. If you will
be sleeping forward and living aft I recommend stiffer foam in the
main cabin. Sitting down we bottomed out with the standard foam.

We stayed in Charleston for a couple of days in November. Really nice
place. I met up with a fellow Quebecer who decided to stay there for
the winter. He was exhausted from the trip down the intracoastal. His
boat was not the best choice for the trip. He had to stand up to
steer the boat.

I'm not sure what material we used when re-upholstering Spring Fever (Lesley's choice; nothing to do with me; I especially wasn't allowed to know how much it cost, so it must've been expensive) but the one 'mistake' we made and worth passing on was that the corners/edges of the cushions all had a bead/piped detail, which looks very pretty and whilst in the saloon it's no problem, they're less comfortable than the old ones in the forecabin, because you're sleeping on more than one cushion and on occassion get woken up by one of these edges 'digging in' to us. Next time we'll make the edges plain.

There always seems to be two or three cruisers in the marina who do canvas work and they usually know where to get the foam and what kind to use. I had one of them do my cushions more than ten years ago with sunbrella in a tropical floral print. Unfortunately, I chose a light seafoam color that needs washing frequently. Its just a matter of removing the covers and throwing them in the laundry but they do get dirty pretty quickly so, if they ever wear out, when I replace them, I'll choose a darker color.
