Help! I am in process of repairing cockpit sole gel coat and will add glassed in stiffeners after removing the head liner. I want to remove the vertical interior plywood panel on the port side of the aft berth, but looking into the lazerette, it appears that this panel may be structural, which would be very troublesome.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

I have an 86 O'Day 222 that I bought new in the Boston Boat Show back then. I've done over thirty mods to this boat through the years including removing every piece of wood from the cabin including all the bulkheads and re staining and varnishing them. The small bulkhead in the bow and the two separate bulkheads in the stern seemed to fit very tight into place, but I was able to remove them and reinstall them later. These panels fit into molded grooves in the fiberglass and they're a son of gun to remove, but they did come out on my boat. As far as I know, there are no wood panels or bulkheads that are glassed in on these boats and I suspect that yours is built the same way as mine. They're just a little tight that's all.

I just cut and installed these panels today. I had to install and remove them several times tweaking the fit since I used the old very rough panels as patterns. When I removed the old panels it was no problem since they had shrunk to only 2 layers of laminate. Anyway you really need to hold your mouth right when pulling the panels out. As long as you have them angled correctly they slide in pretty easily.
