Hello! I have a Lido 14 that I am trying to fix up to get into sailing shape. One area I am trying to tackle is the old Zolatone paint has finally seen it's last day. Apparently the formula has changed since it was painted on my boat and is no where near as hardy as it used to be. Not to mention it would take special equipment and about 150 dollars in just paint alone. (I paid 150 dollars for the boat) Someone else recommended kiwigrip but that looks to be just about as expensive.

Do you think that the rustoleum topside paint + grip addin would work like I want it too? The only probable concern I can see is that it is glossy and the original stuff was very matte. Ideas? Thoughts? Concerns?

Thank you for your time!

(The greyish stuff is what I am repainting, the blue is gelcoat that should refinish just fine)

I haven't tried it yet but some seem quite happy with the Rustoleum paints.
A gloss finish can be taken down a bit with judicious use of fine steel/bronze wool.

Ya I think I'm going to give it a whirl, that is kind of the consensus I am finding.

So next question, do you think gloss battleship grey or semi-gloss white based on the picture above and color scheme of my boat??

I'm leaning more toward battleship grey...looks like it may match the closest.

Home Depot

Wander down to your local Home Depot, and pick up a gallon of polyurathane porch and deck enamel, for about 20 bucks. Add a package of non skid granules for another couple of bucks. More than enough to do the job, so plenty left over for touch up. Any color you can imagine. Easy to apply. And pretty tough stuff.

If you don't like/want a gloss finish, you can add a flatening agent to the paint. You can adjust the flattness to suit your taste. As far as a color, I think the grey might be better at hiding dirt.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I'm going to give the oil based deck paint a try. I'll report back once it is done. May be a couple weeks.

Is it a "splatter" type paint? It's a little hard to tell from the photo. If it is, and you want to duplicate it, "Eastwood" has splatter type paint in spray can that comes out looking very much like that. I think it comes in diff. color combinations. Or just google "splatter trunk paint".

http://www.eastwood.com/trunk-paint-gray-white-kit.html for a "kit", which you probably don't need,

or sep. cans,

http://search.eastwood.com/search?w=trunk spatter paint

or
http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/auto/specialty-paints/trunk-paint/

They [Eastwood] supply 3 cans for covering a trunk, [think 1965 Chevy] , I would get maybe 4 cans.

I've used many Eastwood products and they are quite good.

I think part of the secret with the trunk paint is holding the can back a little further than you would with a normal paint. try a little test panel first.
