interior boom assemblies?

Hello all and thank you for reading. I have an '83 O'day 28 with an Isomat mast and boom. It's the setup where the outhaul and reef line control ends exit the boom at the mast end and are locked in place with cam levers. The outhaul is very rough and does not operate smoothly. In fact it doesn't really function at all unless you help it by actually muscling the foot in and out. My question is, if I pulled the ends off the boom what would I find inside? Do the lines just run directly through the boom or, are there a couple of blocks to help ease the forces on the outhaul? Does anyone know of a schematic of these booms? I hate to rip the ends off just to find the lines run straight through and I could run new lines just using messenger lines. Thanks in advance for any help or insights...:)

I have a Z-Spar boom on my O’Day 322 and the outhaul is just a straight shot through the boom. But my outhaul runs back to the cabin top winch so I can get some purchase on the line when I want to tighten it.
I never understood what those cams do at the front of the boom. I have them too, but they don’t really, seem to do anything.

I think having a functional outhaul is a great upgrade. As we know it controls the depth of the whole lower main adjusting the power and weatherliness of the whole rig. Whatever the setup it should be easily adjusted. From there things get more complicated.
A setup for a cabin top winch will have the least friction. That's important for the release which is normally done in light air. On the downside someone has to be available to make the adjustment. The two part in-the-boom system is the other end of the spectrum. So what does the OP want?
I tend to like the in boom version since the adjustment line can exit the boom in reach of the helm or almost anywhere else. So maybe you want it to be easily reached by crew? Or from rail for rail meat?
I'd encourage the OP and others to design and build the outhaul system that you want based on the way you will use the boat, and not be stuck with the system a production boatbuilder included with the boat.
So go ahead and take the boom ends off. You'll take ownership of that boom and all its hardware (While you're in the boom you'll want to make the reefing lines your own too). You'll scratch your head, cuss a bit but at the end of it you will be proud of your upgrade.
