The insurance carrier is asking for a survey on our 1996 Catalina 320 as a condition of renewal. We have had only one claim(Isabelle)on the policy in the five years we have been with this carrier. Is this standard procedure? Thanks!

Just received my BoatUS insurance renewal for my Catalina 320. There is an interesting statement that the insurer can cancel or fail to renew the policy at any time due to claims that may be filed. I haven't yet discussed with BoatUS but will do so. It appears that having any claim can result in losing insurance. So I guess I should just hope that IF I do have a claim, it's because the entire boat was destroyed.

My insurance co. also requested a survey this year. I was told it was due to the fact that my boat is 18 yrs. old. It cost me $500 for an insurance survey or "C&V" condition and value, not a pre-sale survey.

Fred, There is no 'standard' as such, and I have known carriers to go ten years without a survey, but a 1996 Catalina without any, dismastings, collisions, etc would be about five years and then usually would get away with an 'in water' survey. All has changed since Katrina. There is a lot of negative info coming down the pike from a professional net I belong to. The carriers are really cinching up, and some are dropping out of covering recreational boats altogether, mucho dinero was lost in claims with Katrina, I have had several calls from underwriters...not the usual thing. For good solid information call A.B. Stevenson Co, talk to Frank, he's been in the business for forty five years: 510-895-5915, he will be happy to answer questions, a ex Navy man.

They don't require a survey, at least in Virgina. It's been a godsend savings on multiple boats bought and sold over the years.

I had to get a survey for insurance last year even though I've been with the same carrier for years because my boat was now ten years old. I got an in-water survey and had to pay for it.

Never had a survey
I have owned vessels from ten to 25 years old and insured them with allstate and never had a survey. I told every company that asked for one they are welcome to do one at their expense. They all suck

It would be intersting to hear what others are paying. With no survey, I'm paying $600/year (boat's on the hard for 7 months) for $30,000 coverage on a 1986 Hunter 34 with the same company I have my homeowners, New England Guaranty, a subsidiary of Union Mutual. How about some examples from the rest of you sailors. George

George, that looks a little high to me. I have 96 Catalina 30 insured for $55,000 with 500,000 liability for $341 BoatUS. Where do you keep the boat? Maybe salt water is the difference. fair winds Dave

Location, location, location
We have our Hunter Vision 36 insured for $85k in Cal. with BoatUS. Annual premiums are $600. We gave them a survey when we purchased this boat, but they never asked for one on our '85 H'31.
