Nowdays the fisrt thing boat insurers will do

is to check your record with automobile insurance companies for accidents and claims. They will run a credit check to rule out financial problems. They will request a complete history of your boating experience together with safety courses and training. Then they will look at the boat; make, year, model history and repair costs. Usually they will require a survey at your expense for older boats. They look at where you will be keeping the boat with nice marinas with a safe history ranking much better than a mooring. They will also look at your sailing grounds location and its history for natural disasters. If after all this you make the cut then comes the real test. The premium is $$$, send us your check. Here in Florida we are still paying for the rash of hurricanes in 1995 even though 2006 and 2007 were rather quiet. If you are looking for a good company check with BoatUS or your top tier auto insurers. Make sure to check the limitations in coverage and the seasonal restrictions

Big thing is what year and size and most of what Benny said. What size keeps changing and how much it worth will determine if they will insure you. While I was getting a price quot they would keep changing what size 25,30 ,35 is their cut off sizes. You will need to do your home work by calling all the different insurers. The one company I called the first time said they only insure up to 25 ft,I called 6 months later and they said 30 ft and only $100,000. Maybe its just me with a new higher priced boat that they did not want the risk. I had few insurers for my 2006 new home in florida tell me they would not insure also but they were jerks and went to others and had no problem all getting a good price not high at all even cheaper than what I was paying in NY.
