I am having trouble finding insurance for my new (used) 1975 O'Day 20. Can anyone recommend a source for insurance that would apply in NJ? Thanks in advance.

Try your Homeowners policy

Many companies consider a 20 ft boat to be insurable as a rider on the homeowners policy. Check with your insurance agent. A friend had his 1974 Catalina 30 insured in this method. Steve Holland MI

Homeowner's Policy

My Catalina 25 was covered under my homeowner's policy...but it's liability only, which was OK due to the age of the boat.

Try Boat U.S.

Cate: We went through Boat U.S. for our marine insurance, and had no problems at all. In fact their rates were the lowest of about 10 quotes recieved, and a survey was not required. Good luck.

Try Allstate

Try Allstate. I have had excellent service from them on marine insurance.

Homeowners is easiest

I have my O'Day 23 as a seperate policy with the same agent that does my autos, home and other sailboat. I have liability and stated values for the motor, trailer and and hull. If the boat sinks they bring it back up for me. If the boat breaks loose and sinks a nicer more expensive boat they handle that too. I sail on a small mid-western lake and its pretty cheap for me to insure. I checked and they said I could sail anywhere as long as I don't go more than 75 miles off shore. At hull speed it would take almost dawn to dusk to go that far in my little boat. If I go 75 miles away from land on my boat I don't think I'll be planning on coming back to file a claim.

Allstate won't cover you.

I tried to get my '64 Gramp on an Allstate policy, and the agent told me that they'll only cover boats 20 years old or less. Boats US sent me a very reasonable quote, plus they have towing insurance as part of their policy.

BoatUS

We started out with Farmers which also insures our home and vehicles. After a year they sold our policy to a third party who jacked up the rates. We move to BoatUS and they are very reasonable. Our C22 is 19 years old. They did not require an inspection.

National Marine Underwriters

I have National Marine Underwriters. Their rates were very competitive 5 years ago & have risen substantially since, but they will underwrite older boats. I have a 1977 Catalina 30. Allen Schweitzer s/v Falstaff C-30 Hull# 632
