I need to get coverage for my 1979 Catalina 38. I mostly need local coverage (within 50 miles of the US coast) but I'll also need occasional coverage for passages and time spent in the Bahamas, ect. I need this to be as affordable as possible! My funds are very limited. I recently checked with progressive and got a very reasonable quote BUT they will not go beyond 50mi. Period. So I will either have to purchase trip coverage as needed from someone else or get the whole thing from someone else -whichever is cheaper. Before I blow a bunch of time on this I figured I'd ask around. Who do you use??? THANKS!

BoatUS.....

I started using Boat US this year and I couldn't be happier. It was the least expensive boat insurance I found. When going outside of my Insurance area, for $25 I got a rider to cover me. Best Luck

BoatUS and get the optional towing coverage

I've also been happy with my BoatUS coverage and strongly suggest if you go that route that you consider paying the extra $99 for their towing coverage if you sail in salt water in a location that has towing services. The cost of a boat tow can be frightful--I would have had to pay $399 for a less-than-quarter-mile tow the one time I needed it, and the cost gets much higher for bigger boat sizes and distances. At those prices not needing a tow for years at a time would still make it worth it the one time you do.

BoatUS

Boat US insures my Cat 27, and has for over 12 years. My coverage area is from the N. end of Vancouver Island to just S. of Ensenada, MX, essentially the whole west coast. They will extend it upon request (and I'm sure for a premium), but I've never felt the need. I had one claim with them for a collision I had (my fault). They were fast, efficient, no hassles, and as I recall no premium increase (or at least a very small one). When I compare price quotes from other companies, Boat US is always right in there; not always cheapest, but close. And with great coverage and service!

insurance

i just insured my 1980 30 catalina today. I chose state farm as they already insure my 76 lancer 28. I am happy with the insurance especially the rates but i have no idea of the range limitations and i will call them first thing in the morning. i have a feeling they only are insuring the boat in u.s. waters though. I also have towing through boat u.s. But i have not used it yet.

State Farm Coverage

State Farm's standard policy covers up to 75 miles offshore and the northern part of the Bahamas. I can't remember exactly where the Bahamas coverage stops but it does cover the Abacos and other islands to the south but not the entire chain. They do not cover any other areas of the Caribbean. Another part of the basic coverage is $500 of towing automatically included. There is no option for a higher towing package.

Survey concerns with State Farm...

I was originally insured w/State Farm, before Boat US and they were good and inexpensive. Never had a claim with them. But the reason I went to BoatUS was that, after I think it was 5 years or so, they wanted a survey on the boat (Coronado 25) to continue coverage. (The boat was about 20 years old at the time). I'd provided them a survey when I originally was covered when I bought the boat, and didn't want to spend another $350+ (at that time- now 20 years ago) to have the surveyor provide the ins. company the info I already knew after owning the boat for 5 years. Boat US didn't want a survey then. When I bought the Cat27, Boat US got the purchase survey, and hasn't asked for another after 12 years. (I had one done a few months ago for my one info, and it for the most part told me what I already knew.) So ask about the requirement for subsequent surveys before you insure w/State Farm!

Went Boat US too

did lots of comparison shopping and they offered best rates/coverage. Also, they will extend coverage for trips outside of the base nm range for a very nominal fee.
