I need new instruments for my Cat 27 and was wondering if anybody has any comments on what types are best. I am looking at RayMarine, Moor, and SR Mariner. Thanks in advance.

Sailboat Instruments

We are in the same situation and replacing round Signet Instrumentation with a set of square instruments. Going to fill in thr wholes form the rear of the bulkhead with plastic and install. Raymarine is introducing the ST-60 Plus series in approx two weeks at during the Miami Boat Show. Raymarine informed me that the only difference from the ST-60 series is a slightly rounded edge along the lines of the "E" and "C" series instruments. We are still evaluating and tossing between the ST-60's, Nexus NX2, or B&G H1000 series. If you plan on installing your instruments into a laptop in the future, the list is narrowed to the NX2 or B&G H1000. The wind instruments on both NX2 and B&G can be calibrated, whereas it is preset at the factory for the ST-60. Tough decisions since we only want do do this ONCE.

refurbish

I have a 86 Catalina 27 with SR marina instruments. The instruments were looking old {they were} so I had SR marina refurbish them. They would have taken them in on trade and giving me a deep {50%} discount on new except I prefer to try to keep the equipment original. Good luck, Jack

Raymarine ST60

Just for clarification, the new ST60+ instruments being released from Raymarine in the coming weeks will also have the ability to power on or off individual displays rather than relying on a single breaker. Not a big deal, but a new feature nonetheless. Regarding customer service, try contacting the closest servicing dealer that makes it their business to take care of customers rather than calling Raymarine directly. Best, Trevor

and this of course exuses raymarine from acting professionaly and courteously when catalina, garmin, dmi, garhauer, harken, seaward, and so many others manage. bullshit.

Have you checked out NAVMAN?

We've put Navman 3100 series instruments on our last 2 boats. They have nice features, can talk with a GPS, big dual displays... Customer service people are very good to deal with.

New Instruments

I'm in the same dilema...old instruments that have served their purpose and need to be replaced. Original equipment (1978) Datamaring depth and knotlog that have been repaired several times already, and Standard Horizon wind instrument (3yrs old) that has been in for repair 2x already. At the Strictly Sail show in Chicago last week, we looked at Comnav NX2 series, Tacktic, Raymarine, B&G, and Simrad. All of these had more info in the brochures than the sales reps had to talk about. Tacktick is wireless, and new....I'm not sure I want to go that way yet....very expensive. Simrad sounds interesting, but no dealers in MI. B&G....for our purposes, way too expensive. Raymarine appears on the surface to be the best value, but too many horror stories abound about their customer service/warranty availability. As near as I can tell at this point, a wind/speed/depth system for my boat will run about $1200+ with either Raymarine or Comnav. I'd like more info on other brands before I decide, but, spring's comming, and I've got to get something ordered soon.

New Instruments

We could almost have a separate forum for marine instruments. Since last summer, I have investigated, Navman, Raymarine ST60 series, Nexus NX2, Tack Tick, Signet and B&G H1000 and did more research in Chicago. I am specifically looking for four displays to repalace my Signet Instruments. Signet does not interface with each other. Navman although very affordable, has had quality issues with glue resulting in cracking instrument bezels. The wind transducer doesn't seem to be as durable as other manuufactures. Tack Tick depends on batteries that only can be replaced by the mfg. Additionally Tack Tick seems to be suffering from intermittent radio interference from other radio band wave, ie cell phones, microwaves etc. Raymarine has a new ST60 Plus series being released with the Miami boat show. The difference is a rounded bezel similiar to the E and C series instruments, bright lights for night viewing, and the ability for one instrument to turn off/onn all instruments. The ST-60 would interface into the 4000ST Autohelm with Seatalk. The Sailpak w/ Graphic Display is approx $1,600. Nexus NX2 instruments run off a separate server that can be interfaced into a laptop. Like B&G H1000, NX2 uses a proprietary network, and the multidisplays can be adapted to your specific needs. The wind instruments for both NX2 and B&G H1000 can be calibrated and seem higher quality than the ST60. The ST60, however, has the same windvane as the standard ST290 vane. The ST40 vane is more in line with the Navman. The net cost for the "equivalent" setup for NX2 and B&G H1000 are $2,300 and $2,800, respectively. At the show did you look at Maretron (spelling) utilizing NMEA 2000 and a wind vane without any moving parts? That looked interesting but I haven't had an opportunity to further investigate it yet.

Raymarine

At the Chicago Strictly Sail, a number of equipment dealers I talked to were less than positive towards Raymarine and their quality. If yours is a DIY installation, the warranty is significantly shorter than if installed by a "certified" installer. When I asked the boat dealers why all the new boats had ST-60's installed, they assumed because of lucrative contracts with the boat builders. The "certified" boat dealer/installers said that they couldn't afford to sell/install boats with inferior products because they would have to chase around the defective instruments.
