instrument brand preferences

I have to replace my NAVMAN instruments due to LCD problems. I have found I can replace them with Northstar systems. I want to know what people's experiences have been. I do not want to buy NAVMAN again if they are only going to last a short time.
Anyone's opinion would be welcome. Thank You in advance.

My 2 Cents

If you can still use all your existing transducers (and if it makes any difference to you) with them, that is an important consideration, as it was with me recently in sticking with Raymarine. However, if I were to do a whole new system right now, with a new backbone, I'd pick Furuno. Like I said, just my 2 cents and worth just that.

I believe Northstar is just a rename of NavMan. Some of us were just discussing this in earlier posts. Just this morning there was one about Lowrance. They own Northstar(NavMan) for example. We are trying to figure out whether Lowrance is phasing the others out or just managing their manufacturing and development.

I thought Northstar was the "new" name for the Navman instruments. Look at all the instruments and determine what you will really use. New instruments packages can display a wide assortment of data and calculations. If you are not going to use all the data, why do you want to pay extra for the feature. FWIW, although we have an integrated Raymarine package with chartplotter, autohelm, wind, depth, and speed, my preference would be Comnav.

Navman - Northstar

I had mine replaced even the guarantee was expired by 4 months. I was told there was a "heat" problem with the Navman Speed display unit. I e-mail them the bill of purchase and I got a replacement Northstar in a few weeks. No need to change the transducer but they ship me the whole kit anyway. Now I have a spare paddle wheel ;-)

The replacement has worked flawlessly for the entire 2009 season with some really hot days and longed trips. They might still "repair" your's for about $90. The repair may be just a replacement. People there were pretty friendly and helpfull. Give them a call. Raymarine is nice but cost me more pretty pennies which I don't have.
