I am replacing a standard winch with a self tailing one. This winch is for my in-mast furler. What bedding compound should I use? The Lewmar site has the following instructions--- 5 x M6 (1/4 in) c’sk head screws on 94mm (3 11/16 in) PCD---- concerning the mounting bolts. I assumed that the winch would come with bolts but I was wrong. What kind of head is a c'sk and what would you guess that PCD stands for. Although this winch is a # 14 and the existing one is a #8, the bases are nearly the same diameter so maybe I can use the bolts from my old winch. Any advice will be welcome. Bill

Not Sure

what the PCD refers to but it looks like the lenght of the bolt. The c'sk is counter sink or tapered head from the top to the thread. I hope this helps.

Thanks on the bolts

Any suggestions on the bedding compound. I assume that it is more for water proofing than for strength so I was thinking a silicone sealer maybe.

5200

This is a personal preferance so flame me if you want but I don't like water leaking into my boat. GM 5200 is designed for sticking to everything and perminant (read 10 years) instalations. Silicone has a nasty habit of not sticking to gelcoat unless you do a REAL good job of "dewaxing" it. It also does not like to flex much. Once you start flexing one surface or the other it decides living on the non flexing (winch in this case) surface would be easier and peels off the gelcoat. A winch will be seeing lots of stress and flexing is part of that. 5200 is the dickins to remove however, but that could well be the next owners problem or the one after that!

4200 has just as good of properties.

Bill: 4200 has just as good or better (than 5200) properties for your application except it is not a gluing agent. There are only a couple of places on a boat that 5200 belongs (in my opinion (keel/hull & deck to hull joints). My personal preference is Life Caulk. When you bed any item it is best to NOT tighten down the fasteners until 12-24 hrs after the hardware has been mounted. This allows the caulking/sealant to become like a gasket. Then you can tighten the bolts/screws to their proper tension.

LifeCaulk

We use LifeCaulk for all beddings, above and below the waterline, and have been very successful w/ not leaks.
