Hello sailors,
Could you advise me on how I should mount a tempered glass to separate the wash basin from seating area just like those in H356. I read someone uses some bonding compound to anchor the bracket on the Cordian counter top and perhaps another uses screw to secure it to the counter top. Which is better way? If glue, what glue it is? If screw, is the Cordian counter like stone? Will it take to screw?
Thanks in advance.

Why don't you contact Hunter Marine. They probably can supply the parts and tell you what other materials are needed.

Can you use lexan/plexiglass and make mounting brackets to the back of the cabinet? That is what I did on my 30T. I made custom wood brackets and screwed them to the back of the cabinet and then with little bolts to the lexan.

Look at pictures in Owners modification for 356. We have glued with Sikaflex and it hav been OK for 5 years. Clean the Corian well.

Patrick, thanks for info. Would that be Sikaflex 291 ?

glass mounting

If you use a channel to fit the glass into, it can be held to the Corian with clear 100% silicone caulking. Screws can be driven into Corian, but drill the appropriate size pilot hole.

Steve, thanks. I bought the toilet glass shelf and it has a bracket for screw mounting to wall. I'm mounting the glass shelf vertically i.s.o. horizontally so only option is either screw the bracket to Corian counter top or glue it down. Haven't decide how it will be done yet. I can try marina silicon sealant but there isn't enough length to lay. Only the small mounting bracket touches the Corian counter top. Glass is "floated" off table. Think I'll try double-sided tape just to see how I like the shelf before committing.

I would screw it down. I think with all of the movement of the hull and the moisture you are going to be better off with a solid attachment.

I think you may want to get a tapered drill bit for drilling the Corian. I have not drill this stuff so I don't know what to expect. I would put a piece of masking tape over the area to be drilled to prevent and cracking.

I would bet that the Corian can be tapped and you could use machine screws too.

Coincidently I spoke to Ronnie Barnes at Hunter Marine (800-771-5556 ext 4 or retailparts@huntermarine.com) today about same for my boat. They offer a couple of options in clear Plexiglas with brackets. You could get same from a plastics shop or tempered glass from a glass shop. Consider how to secure it to either the counter top with screws and brackets or backstop in some fashion. Steve offers guidance if you drill into a Corian countertop.

Corian is a brand name of one company's solid surface material. It is acrylic and can be cut, drilled, routed, and most anything that can be done to wood.

How did you secure the brackets to the Corian? Did you use machine screws?

I think Hunter supplied all parts but I may have gotten some stainless screws and predrilled small hole first what ever size in the mounting braket that Hunter supplied, was going to use nuts and bolts but did not and it is very strong since 2007,it was used on the new 2007 38 so just measured to check and it fit right in on or counter and we love the way it looks yes $$$$ but well worth it.

Seadaddler, that's exactly what I want done albeit my glass is shorter. it'll do. I tried double-sided tape. Its kinda shaky when bump into but holds for now. For permanent think I'll drill a pilot hole for ss wood screw. Thanks for info/pictures.

LDM, thanks for info about Corian material being like wood. Its so solid and heavy, me think its ceramic.

I think Corian is a lot like a hard Plastic rather than ceramic it's very easy to drill

I was wondering if you drilled and tapped the holes or just used "wood screws".

SS Screws

I am not sure if I used sheet metal stainless type or wood type I guess either is good but did not tap at all just made sure the screws went in snugg but not too tight or loose,if the screws were going in too hard I stopped and drill next size with out too big because I think I could only use certain size to fit in the stainless bracket.

Corian is a Polymer. It can be drilled and routed. It works like a hard plastic. If you route it use a sharp carbide bit. If you cut out for sinks etc do not leave square corners, it will crack eventually always leave a small radius in the corners. If you want to screw something to it use a threaded insert and epoxy it in. I have tapped it in the past but holding strength is not good, and in our shop we can't do it due to warranty issues. Typical counter tops are put down with nothing more than a silicon adhesive so it is not hard fastened to anything that will expand and contract at a different rate. If you get scratches you can use varying grit scotchbrite pads on an orbital sander to polish it out. See the Corian Web site and they explain it. It's really pretty easy.
