Installing outboard motor bracket....

I have a 1985 Hunter 25.5 with a Yanmar 1GM diesel. I am thinking of installing a removable outboard motor bracket so that I could use an outboard motor if push came to shove and my diesel wasn't working. Right now I am looking at the Garelick 71053 adapter (http://www.garelick.com/marine/images/catalog/71053_lg.jpg) and the 71057 bracket (http://www.garelick.com/marine/images/catalog/oma_aomb_71057_lg.jpg). So I have a few questions for those 25.5 owners who already have a factory installed outboard motor bracket. Is there a backing plate? If so can you give me thickness and dimensions? Also do you know what material it's made out of, aluminum or stainless. Or do the bracket though-bolts just come through the transom and are secured with extra large fender washers? Does your outboard get in the way of your rudder? Is your rudders maximum travel limited by the outboard/bracket? Can the prop ever hit the rudder? Do you know who the manufacturer of the factory installed bracket is? Do you know the model number of the bracket? I am also trying to get an idea as to where to locate my bracket so if you have any kind of dimensions you could give me as to the location of your bracket that would be very helpful. Thanks so much for all your help.

My two cents

1. Big washers should do the job, but to sleep better at night you could cut a piece of plywood and drill four holes in it. That would be a strong plate for sure. 2. Proper placement requires that you have the prop sufficiently submerged. Find another boat with your motor and measure how far up the waterline to place the bracket. Note whether the shaft is long or normal, since that matters.

backing plate for outboard bracket

had to put a new motor mount on my H22 and used a plastic cutting board (not sure of the exact type of plastic it was made of) as a backing plate - strong and durable, cost about seven bucks (found this suggestion on this website so search the archives for some more tips)

Anthony, have a 25.5 with a OB.

I have my OB bracket mounted on the port side. Rudder does not even get close. The mounting bolts run all the way through to inside. Inside I have a 2 foot square x 1/16 " sheet of aluminum for a backing plate followed up by big fender washers. Trust me, when you run a ground and through that puppy in reverse and throttle up the engine, you will be glad you had that backing plate to dissapate the load. Ted
