installing new shrouds

I am installing new standing rigging on my boat (89 catalina 22). Where the shrouds connect to the spreaders, do the shrouds slide on the spreader or does the boot keep them in place. The old ones had a short stran of stainless wire and a cap that secured the shroud in the slot. The boot was taped over this. One would slide but the other would not. I am guessing that they are not to slide but just want to make sure. Also, can I use a cotter pin to hold them in place? Thanks

QUESTION

Sorry, no help from me - just piling on your question... What was the condition of your standing rigging when you decided to replace it. I've got a 79 Cat 22 fixer upper - I've done much, but have not touched the rigging yet. It may not have to be replaced, I do not know, I have not inspected it yet. Just interested in what things led to your decision to replace the standing rigging. Thanks Scott

Is replacement really necessary?

an 89 should not need the standing rigging replaced unless you see clear physical damage. It sounds like your issue relates to the movement(or the lack thereof) of the wire within the spreader. You may try to lubricate the one wire that does not move with a little WD-40. The wire is intended to move up and down within the end of the spreader. I don't have a Catalina 22 but I do know that the spreader is not supposed to be secured to the wire in such a manner that it cannot move but acts more as a guide.

Why I replaced my shrouds

I decided to replace my shrouds because one had a big kink in it and a few of the threaded rods ends get really bent when stepping the mast. Any Idea how to prevent that from happening. I had the PVC pipe covering my turnbuckles. It helps to hold the shrouds up while stepping but you can's see when one is kinked. I was thinking about getting some clear tubing just to put over the turnbuckles so that I could see them. We are hoping to put the boat in dry storage at the lake so be don't have to trailer it back and forth. I seems that I have more problems while trailering. No matter how hard I try, things just get bent.

Does any one know proper shroud length

I'm in the middle of the same task but believe it or not the length of my inner's does not match from side to side . If anyone has specs on a 77ish 22 I could use the help. Thanks
