Installing new cleats

I am looking at replacing my existing CAM cleats with powercleats and I have a question (as usual). Are there backing plates already permanently affixed below the existing cam cleats? I don't see anyway to get to the underside fo the cleats, so I would assume that there are already threaded backing plates beneath the existing cleats? I didn't want to take them off and risk not being able to reinstall them :) If not, how can I replace them and make sure that they are securely / correctly installed?

Well, I've got to believe...

if you're putting any kind of load on those CAM cleats that you've got to have a backing plate on them. The backing plate is probably the most important part of the cleat assembly. I'm actually planning on installing two forward cleats on the outside toe rail of my Hunter 29.5 (1994 models have the cleats positioned in the anchor locker), and I will definitely have some backing plates made to carry the load. Good luck and fair winds...

Little uncertain about the question. Take a look at my solution for replacing the existing hardware with Spinlocks. http://pws.chartermi.net/~gkobernus/H260_Web/misc_upgrades.htm
