Hello All,
I own a 2000 Hunter 290. My goal is to mount my Garmen 541 Chartplotter on the pedestal. I would like to run power from the circuit panel in the cabin to the GPS, but am finding it impossible to run the wire. I have taken down all of the panels that exist but none seem to help with running the wire. The only existing power sources in the pedestal now are for a few lights, the ignition, and a few gauges. Has anyone done this, and if so how? Thanks much. Jeff

I think Garmin put themselves out of that market when the idiots put a magnet in the chip door on their new units. Check if that is one of the models and maybe talk to a compass adjuster to see if he thinks he can compensate for it. I'm sure he will have run into it before.

I like my set up with the big chartplotter inside on an arm that swings out so I can see it through the companionway. It's nice to plan routes inside a nice dry, warm cabin. I have a small hand held mounted on the steering pedestal for the close in detail view. It is generally uncluttered with routes. The big plotter shows the route and the big picture.

Roger - thanks for the information - did you fish wires to the pedastal from the circuit panel? Thanks.

My pedestal has the inverted "U" shaped handrail over the top. I drilled a hole in one leg and put in a rubber grommet. I then epoxied a tube into the deck in the center of the socket at the foot to make a water coaming. A cable with a plug for the Garmin handheld runs down through the handrail and forward to a terminal block where it gets power and the NEMA signal that goes to the DSC radio.

You need another H290 owner to tell you where they found power Jeff. My boat had at least two wires under the pedestal carrying 12 volts. I just spliced into one of those.

Another option, if you really need a separate breaker, is a wire from the back of the battery switch to a separate breaker in a handy spot. Then on to the pedestal. I did that for my refrigeration rather than run a heavy wire all the way across the boat.

I have lots of spliced wire under the cockpit sole. To the autohelm, lighted binnacle, an old Garmin 12XL, and my Garmin chartplotter. Plan is to install a nice terminal board and clean it up someday.

Been a while

I had a 2001 290 but it has been awhile since running the radar cable when I added radar up the mast so trying to remember and it's hard but if I remember there is a removeable panel under the cockpit with a light on it and me thinks that is where I got the cable to go up to the helm and my chartplotter.
Trying to remember that i ran the cable on the starboard side where the FM and me thinks the electrical panel,up behind the FM after I removed the FM was a PVC pipe and the wires run in that towards the holding tank I think and I did fish wire a lot to run wires but the wires for the chartplotter were already wired by the dealer but had all separate breakers.
I will look back and see in my 290 photo's to see if any help.

I just ran 8 or more cables in my 310( I imagine its similar). Its eaziest if you remove the cockpit floor panel(4 screws) and slide it out. You will see the black wire harness that leads to the starboard locker, then down inside by the fuel tank. Inside the aft cabin, there is a white PVC conduit from the breaker panel running aft. It may take going from the aft hole into the fuel tank area with a fish cable to catch the wire once in the cockpit locker/ fuel tank, pull that thru then fish from the breakers back with a fishing cable to finish it.

Thanks to all for your response. I was able to run the wires from the breakers back under the counter top in the head, through the bulkhead and along the top of the rear cabin, then up into the pedestal.

Does anyone know if/where I can get a new label for the breaker in the breaker panel?

Thanks,
Jeff
