Yes, this is an elementary question. But what is the best way to install a battery? I have to replace my old battery and the last time I did so, sparks flew.

Is it best to put the negative on first, then the positive?

Or, what is the best/safest way to do this?

Thanks.

Install the battery with the main switch off and there should not be any sparks.

Main switch off and negative first is how I was taught.

On the positive side, the last thing I do is put the fuse in. So you shouldn't spark connecting the positive anyways because it won't be a completed circuit until the fuse goes in.

You change the battery in your boat just like the battery in your car. You remove the Neg. (-) terminal first and this is so when you remove the Pos.(+) terminal if you accidentally touch grounded metal with your wrench nothing will happen. It is reversed when you put your new battery in, (+) first and (-) last.

Battery switch off will isolate most loads. You may have a hardwired bilge pump but that will only produce some light sparks. Regarding which to connect first, it does not matter.
