Installing AC

Would like to know were you have had your AC units installed on 30' Hunter. If you did it your self what kind of problems did you encountered in the instillation process.

Bought my '82 H30 4 years ago and it came with a portable home AC window unit that would 'sit/balance' in the companionway.....far from ideal! The unit now sits under my workbench in the basement.

What type of AC system are you considering for your H30? MarineAir, etc?

We looked at a H30 that had the unit mounted in the hanging locker area. He had one vent to the salon and one to the v-berth area. Worked fairly well but you lose your locker space.

I can't recall the make of the unit. Unfortunately the ac was the best part of that boat and didn't get into details. I reckon they are all pretty much the same as far as size etc.

I jest got the Marine Air 12000 btu unit today. I'm trying to find out the locations that others like or disliked about their instillation.

Well I decided to install it on the starboard side. The unit is in the v-birth at the front with the ducting running down the starboard side. I went with 6" PVC pipe for the ducting and made my boxes. I also used two 4"x 12" floor registers. I'm not done with the install; will keep you up to date as I have time.

So far so good Amos! I like the registers. PVC seems like a good idea too. Keep us posted.

The registers are red oak with cherry stain. The reason I went with PVC is because I was worried about damaging the flex pipe with all the stuff I store.

Keep us posted, how much power does it draw. Can you use it with your regular 30 amp shore power...

Yes it can use a 30 amp shore power because it is a 110 unit only. So it can't be used when sailing.

Here are some photos of the plumbing. The first one us the out line above the water line, thus is the Mermaid for the drain pan so the water will not have to go to the bulge, this the the water supply then the shut off then a T with another shut off for winterizing with the strainer and then the pump. This one us the area that will supply the return air. I will install a wire grade with a filter too. Still waiting for the wiring and breakers too; so I will give you a update later.

Would like to see where you installed the ac unit. It was difficult to figure this out from the pictures.

My 12K unit on my H37C is a Mermaid and came with the condensator, a nice feature. And it will run off my Honda 2000W generator. With no other a-c running that is.

Our v birth has three storage areas. The AC unit is in the one at the front and the pump, strainer and throw hull are on the starboard side. All the pipe goes down the starboard side throw the closet and then to the salon area. I hope this helps.
