There is room in the existing panel to install one back by the starboard rear winch. Is there a way to do that without tearing out the aft cabin headliner?

Thanks

I'm not sure I understand , but if you are going to install it in the panel just remove the panel.

More Info

I am not sure what you are asking and also what kind of temp guage,
I own a 2007 H-36 since it was new and have added many things and have taken things apart all over the boat and maybe can help.

I understand that I can just pull out the instrument panel from the cockpit with just about 4 screws to install the actually gauge. But I am asking how to get the sender line from the engine compartment back to the gauge without pulling down a headliner or two.

I'm sure it's similar to the one I installed in my 05 H33. Run sender wire under aft bed into transom area back to starboard side and to engine panel. You can follow some of the other engine wiring.

Nope, sorry, you must dissasemble 3/4 of the interior of your boat to install one simple thing above decks. ;)

Seems everytime I go to do something the boat ends up half torn apart. Right now I have the aft cabin pulled all apart and the headliner taken out just trying to re-tightn the stanchion base on the starboard side, which has no access above the hanging locker in the aft cabin :cussing::cussing:

Remember

If I remember there is a PVC pipe that comes into the rear of engine compartment that has the 2 cables from tranny and diesel pump and goes
to the rear stern and from there you can run the wire towards holding tank and up to the cockpit panel to fit temp gauge into panel.
I am planning the same thing.

If you google wireless temperature gauge, you will find some that are bluetooth. I have read of some folks using a wireless weather station and connecting the temp gauge to the engine for a quick and dirty way to monitor engine temp.

Digital temp gauge

If you use a digital temp gauge with an alarm, you can use the existing wire from the engine to the over-temp idiot light on your panel. In addition, you don't need a second temp sender on the engine. I added one a few years back and it works great. The gauge is acurate and I set an alarm for engine temps over 190 degrees.

JohnT,
Was the installation as simple as it seems? How did you tease out the thermostat alarm wire from the spaghetti behind the ignition panel?

Thanks everyone. JohnT, are you saying that the existing 'alarm' sender line for temperature will work for a temp gauge as well?

Temp alarm wire

Several years ago I installed a CruzPro T30 digital temperature gauge with alarm on my 2000 H340 with the Yanmar 3GM30F engine. I replaced the original engine temperature alarm sender (off/on) with a Telflex 3/8” variable sensor that works with a gauge. The alarm was set at 190F. After checking with the Yanmar wiring diagram for my engine, I used the original blue/white wire that ran from the original/old engine mounted sensor to the idiot light on the pedestal. I disconnected the blue/white wire from the idiot light on the panel and ran it to drive the new gauge. The ground for the new gauge was tapped into a common ground wire on the fuel gauge and the positive for the gauge wire was tapped into the Positive lead on the ignition switch. The gauge worked great and was calibrated for the Telflex sensor (U-4). I have used it for several years now and it gives me good continuous reading of the engine temperature. Of course, I no longer have an idiot light and alarm for engine over-temp - but I now have a controllable over-temp alarm built into the temp gauge. That saved me from installing a second engine sensor - with all the issues that involved.

As Nick said just run the wire for the temp sender through the pvc tube at the back of the engine (used for the control cables and Yanmar wires). It will bring the wire out to the stern swim platform locker, beside the holding tank.

Remove the Yanmar cockpit control panel. You will find it sits in a molded coaming box with a hole for the wires. You should be able to easily fish the wire up through this hole from the aft swim platform locker.

If you have a problem you may have an access panel in the aft berth just below the arch attachment bolts, you can just reach this area behind the coaming box from there.
