I am about to istall a Raymarine ST4000 wheel mounted autopilot in my C320. The only things I need help with (I think) are where and how to mount the rudder position sensor and what is the best location for the compass?

ST4000 Install

Hey Chris, I have a C-30 with the ST4000+ autopilot & I had to mount my compass in a few different locations before I got it right. Basically, you want to stay away from anything that's magnetic (speakers, VHF radios, electrical wiring, engine) and anything that's metallic (engine, tanks). You also want to be as close to the boat's center of gravity as possible. That would be amidship on the centerline, at waterline height. It's not that tough to find a place on most boats. Just make your installation temporary until you've had a chance to "swing" the compass and make sure the deviation value isn't too high. My value is 8, which isn't perfect, but overall the performace is good. Good luck! Allen Schweitzer s/v Falstaff C-30 Hull# 632
